The 20th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 23rd was the only individual time trial of this Tour de France. It ran over 42.5 kilometers and hilly terrain around Grenoble . There were three split times at kilometer 15 as well as at 27.5 and 37.5.

Race course

Fabio Sabatini , last in the overall standings, opened the race. However, it was Danny Pate who crossed the finish line first after he had overtaken Sabatini and Andrey Amador on the individual time trial and set the first reference time. Maciej Bodnar undercut Pate's first two intermediate times, but was behind him in the last intermediate time and at the finish. The next best time was delivered by Lieuwe Westra . This lasted until Fabian Cancellara crossed the finish line, who needed 57:15 minutes for the distance, which corresponded to an hourly average of 44.54 km / h. A better time for him was prevented by occasional rain and inaccurate knowledge of the route on his part.

Kristijan Koren and Adriano Malori took their place behind Cancellara . When the rain stopped and the track dried up again, one after the other Richie Porte and Thomas De Gendt managed to beat Cancellara's best time. Edvald Boasson Hagen only achieved a new personal best at the first split time measurement , but then fell back because of a wheel change. The best time of De Gendt was later clearly undercut by Tony Martin . He drove the distance in a time of 55:34 minutes, which was not to be undercut until the end and was enough for him to win the day.

Now it was all about the Tour victory: Cadel Evans , third in the overall standings before the stage, took second by second from Andy Schleck , who started last, and crossed the finish line just seven seconds behind Martin. Third place in the stage went to last year's winner Alberto Contador , who was just under a minute slower than Evans. Andy Schleck finally crossed the finish line 2:38 minutes behind the winner of the day and 2:31 minutes on Evans, transforming his lead of 57 seconds into a deficit of 1:34 minutes. In the youth competition, Pierre Rolland defended the white jersey against Rein Taaramäe , to whom he lost 47 seconds and thus saved a 46-second lead.
