The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2015 took place on July 5, 2015. It led over 166 kilometers from Utrecht via Rotterdam to Neeltje Jans in the Netherlands through almost completely flat terrain. The destination was the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier as part of the Dutch Delta Works in the province of Zeeland . The route along the coast was demanding due to the possible wind edges . After 80.5 kilometers, an intermediate sprint was held in Rotterdam. There were no mountain ratings. The second stage counted as a flat stage. All 198 drivers started.

Race course

Immediately after the start, a four-person escape group formed with Jan Bárta (BOA), Stef Clement (IAM), Perrig Quéméneur (EUC) and Armindo Fonseca (BSE). The four drivers were able to gain a maximum of 2:40 minutes on the main field. Due to strong winds, the main field split for a short time, and the front group tried to remove any favorites that had fallen behind for the overall victory by increasing the pace. As a result, the lead of the breakaway group shrank significantly to just 20 seconds shortly before Rotterdam. Even before the intermediate sprint, the suspended drivers managed to catch up with the main field. Jan Bárta attacked shortly before the intermediate ranking and secured the 20 points. The sprint of the main field was won by John Degenkolb ahead of Alexander Kristoff and Peter Sagan .

Clement and Fonseca later caught up with Bárta again, but were unable to build up a new lead and were eventually overtaken. In the meantime, the weather conditions had worsened, with repeated falls when it rained. For this reason and due to the strong crosswind near the coast ( wind edge ), the peloton split again around 50 kilometers from the finish. The second group did not manage to keep up with the leading group, including Chris Froome , Alberto Contador , Fabian Cancellara , Tom Dumoulin and Tony Martin , despite being only a few seconds behind . Rather, it was later overtaken by a third group and then comprised 65 drivers, including Nairo Quintana , Vincenzo Nibali , Jean-Christophe Péraud and Thibaut Pinot . Rohan Dennis in the yellow jersey was also in the second group, which finished 1:28 minutes behind the first 24 drivers, a good three and a half minutes ahead of the peloton.

André Greipel won the finish sprint ahead of Peter Sagan and Cancellara. Cancellara was able to secure a four-second time bonus with third place, through which he overtook Tony Martin and the suspended Dennis in the overall classification and was the new bearer of the yellow jersey. Greipel secured the lead in the sprint standings with 50 points from the stage win and five points from the intermediate sprint. Tom Dumoulin got into the white jersey of the best young driver.

The result of 1:28 minutes behind Nairo Quintana on Chris Froome at the finish is remarkable. This means that the overall second Quintana was more behind the eventual tour winner than at the end of the tour (1:12 minutes). So the outcome of this stage may have been decisive.
