The 78th Tour de Suisse ran over nine stages from June 14, 2014. It was the 17th race of the UCI WorldTour 2014 .
World champion Rui Alberto Costa from the Lampre-Merida team won the Tour de Suisse for the third time in a row. He relegated Mathias Frank , who won the white jersey of the best Swiss, and the Dutchman Bauke Mollema to places two and three. Fourth was world time trial champion Tony Martin , who wore the yellow jersey of the leader in the overall standings throughout the tour . It was only in the last stage that he was ousted from first place. The mountain classification won the German Björn Thurau , the points classification went to the Slovak Peter Sagan for the fourth time in a row . The Belgian Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team won four out of the nine stages to decide for which team score won the Dutch Belkin Pro Cycling Team . The organizers received massive criticism after a mass fall in the final of the 5th stage in Büren an der Aare due to two tight bends in the last 400 meters before the finish.
Attendees
All ProTeams were entitled to start . There were also four professional continental teams who received a wildcard from the organizer .
