The first stage was held on a circuit around Baden . The three following stages were flat to slightly wavy and therefore tailored to the skills of the sprint specialists. Then the demanding part through the Alps began with the 5th stage and the mountain arrival in Leukerbad . On the 6th stage, the riders had to overcome the Furka Pass , the Oberalp Pass and the Albula Pass .

The 7th stage led from the Engadin over the Julier Pass and Lukmanier Pass into Ticino . The 8th stage was a demanding high mountain circuit with start and finish in Ambrì , the route led over the Lukmanier Pass and the Oberalp Pass (both from the opposite side) and finally over the Gotthard Pass . The final decision was made on the 9th stage, an individual time trial to Bern . The stage and overall winner Jan Ullrich , however, was subsequently disqualified for doping .
