Tourism in Schleswig-Holstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The tourism is one of the most important economic factors of Schleswig-Holstein . The northernmost German state is also known as the "land between the seas" because of its geographical location. Because of its coasts on the North Sea and Baltic Sea , it has a large number of islands, beaches and water sports . Schleswig-Holstein also offers beach holidays with the family, relaxation, active holidays by bike as well as trips to discover and explore the city and nature. In particular, the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beaches on the North and Baltic Seas and Lübeck's old town are among the main attractions.

The country's tourism industry is growing steadily. The number of guests and overnight stays increases not only in summer, but also outside the main season. Schleswig-Holstein is also becoming increasingly important as a meeting and congress location. The state is one of the most popular German travel destinations and came third in a country comparison in Germany in 2018 after Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Bavaria.

Accommodation and gastronomy

overnight stay

Schleswig-Holstein has a large number of hotels , guest houses and youth hostels . Overnight accommodations near the beach are naturally particularly popular. Private accommodation in the country and holidays on the farm are also offered. Hay hotels , beach chairs and houseboats are also enjoying increasing popularity . There are also numerous holiday homes and campsites .

eat

Schleswig-Holstein is an agricultural country and also a fishing location . Both are reflected in the offers of the local gastronomy .

Due to the milk production, there is a variety of local cheeses .

The Holsteiner Katenschinken is famous . Other smoked dishes such as smoked eel also have an old tradition here. A local specialty are the " Kieler Sprotten " (traditionally produced in Eckernförde ) . These small smoked fish are often eaten in their entirety, but connoisseurs remove the head and backbone with one skillful movement.

The Krabbenpulen is common in the fishing towns on the North Sea. The outer shell of the crabs is removed ( pulled away ) in order to get to the inside. North Sea shrimps can of course be found in the home kitchen. However, many crabs that were already available pelted were caught in the North Sea, but shipped frozen to Poland or Morocco , for example , since labor-intensive pumping is much cheaper there.

Even native mussels and mash coils are offered for season.

The herring season brings many anglers to the inlets of the Baltic Sea, where the herring gather. Matjes is just as popular here as the Bismarck herring .

Another well-known north German dish is the Labskaus . The dish is prepared in different regions from Hamburg to Flensburg, in Flensburg for example with herring and corned beef . Connoisseurs argue whether the Labskaus should or shouldn't contain fish.

Lübeck's marzipan is world-famous . It was actually born out of necessity during a siege of the city of Lübeck, when the bakers ran out of grain, but had plenty of almonds . Today it is considered the souvenir from Schleswig-Holstein, and the well-known manufacturer Niederegger exports its products worldwide marzipan. A sip of Lübeck Rotspon goes well with Lübeck marzipan .

The red fruit jelly is widespread throughout northern Germany and Denmark .

Drink

Especially on the west coast there is an old tea tradition comparable to drinking East Frisian tea . A specialty of the country, however, is the Pharisee , a coffee with icing and a strong shot ( rum or other spirits ). Other traditional alcoholic hot drinks are grog and punch (with or without a shot or Köm , but always a mulled wine ).

The rum from Flensburg is just as well known as the Bommerlunder , an aquavit (caraway schnapps). In the last 20 years, the Flensburg brewery became known nationwide through the comic figure Werner . The beer called Flens is served nationwide and comes in a characteristic flip-top bottle . Another important brewery is the Dithmarscher brewery .
