Transilien

A Francilien type Transilien train at La Barre-Ormesson station

Transilien are suburban trains that run within the greater Paris area . What is meant are the regional trains that travel far beyond the city limits and are operated exclusively by SNCF .

The RER lines A , B (lines A and B are partly operated by the RATP ), C , D and E also belong to the Transilien in the broader sense . Their peculiarity in contrast to the rest of the Transilien network is that they cross the capital and are therefore also important for inner-city traffic, while Transilien in the narrower sense are those lines that have their starting point at one of the major Parisian train stations. Transilien takes over the tasks of the 22 TER companies in other regions of France . Transilien trains carry 600 million passengers a year.

Significance within the SNCF routes

SNCF Transilien operates SNCF's local passenger transport within the Ile-de-France. More than 6000 train connections daily serve 381 stations and transport 2.9 million passengers daily. They cover 170,000 km a day.

40% of all train journeys are carried out on 10% of the national rail network. 2/3 of all transport cases in France are on the Ile-de-France.

The network of the Transilien is divided into different route groups, which are designated with letters. Whereby routes with the same code letter begin at the same station in Paris or are related to such.

In the following list, route groups are listed under the heading of the departure station, e.g. B. "Saint-Lazare", summarized.

Line P does not run entirely in Île-de-France, because five stations on the northern branch are in the Aisne department in Picardy . The name Line P was introduced at the end of 2004.

Line P is quite prone to disruptions: in 2011 only 90.6% of the trains were on time, meaning they arrived with less than 5 minutes delay. In 2012 it was only 88.8%.

The rolling stock is currently being successively replaced by the so-called Francilien trains (series SNCF Z 50000 ): The first trains were put into operation in February 2013 and the campaign is to be completed in 2015. In order to cope with the high volume of traffic, double-decker trains will continue to be used on the Paris ↔ Meaux route during peak times even after 2015.

Schematic route line U

The direct connection between La Défense and La Verrière has existed since May 1995, and since the end of 2004 the official name has been Ligne U du Transilien .

The western terminus: Verrière station

The trains on the Transilien U line carry 55,000 travelers every day. Two- system vehicles are used , namely double-decker multiple units of the SNCF Z 8800 series , until December 2003 trains of the Z 20 500 series were in use.

The U line trains usually run every 30 minutes. During rush hour, Mondays to Fridays, there is usually a double traction at 15-minute intervals. On Sundays and public holidays a train runs every hour in each direction. Up to 43 trips per direction are offered daily. The journey between the two end stations takes about 45 minutes.

Since the northern part of the route (from La Défense to behind Viroflay-Rive-Droite) is supplied with alternating current (25 kV; 50 HZ), while the southern part with direct current of 1.5 kV voltage, the use of dual-system vehicles is inevitable.

Punctuality of the Transilien lines

Users of the Transilien trains often criticize the fact that the system suffers from deficiencies and that the trains are often unpunctual or even fail completely.

And rightly so, as the table below shows. The target and actual values are based on an agreement between the person who ordered the trips (STIF) and the operator (SNCF) performing the trips: The actual value corresponds to the percentage of travelers who arrive at their destination station on time or with a maximum of 5 Minutes late. If the specified target value is exceeded, the operator receives a bonus on the agreed payments from the STIF; if the target value is not met, the operator is obliged to pay penalties.
