Travis is a Scottish rock band from Glasgow . Her name refers to the main character in the film Paris, Texas by Wim Wenders .
history
In the early 1990s , singer Francis "Fran" Healy played with a seven-piece band called Glass Onion . At that time guitarist Andrew Dunlop and drummer Neil Primrose were already there. Controversy arose between Healy and some of the band members, until only himself, Dunlop and Primrose were left. Healy brought his best friend Douglas Payne into the downsized band as bassist. Payne had never played an instrument before, but quickly mastered the bass guitar. Of Glass Onion was Travis . In the mid-1990s, the four of them moved from Glasgow to London .
In 1997 the debut album Good Feeling was released . The most famous tracks on this album are All I Want to Do Is Rock and U16 Girls . Originally the first song was supposed to be called All I Wanna Do Is Fuck , but Healy decided - out of consideration for his mother (" I couldn't do that to my Mum. ") - to stick with the more harmless choice of words. Occasionally, however, he uses the F-word at concerts when Travis is playing this piece live on stage.
In 1999 the second album The Man Who was released , which is named after Oliver Sacks ' book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat . This book is about cognitive disorders in humans. Since the band's first album was called "schizophrenic" by many critics and Sack's book is also about schizophrenia , Travis named the second album accordingly. The single Why Does It Always Rain on Me was her first big hit. With The Man Who , the time began in Travis played more frequently at festivals.
In the summer of 2001 the third album The Invisible Band was released , the most famous songs of which are the singles Sing and Side . The associated video clips are also concise. In Sing is to see a grotesque Essorgie, leading to a food fight, at the end of a cooked squid on horrified faces lands - while the band in the video for Side of aliens is kidnapped.
It would almost come to an end in 2002 by Travis when drummer Neil Primrose during a tour by France almost drowned in the hotel pool. Primrose had suffered several fractures in his spine after jumping into the half-filled swimming pool. For a short time he was even threatened with paraplegia . He later made a full recovery from the accident.
Finally, in October 2003, Travis' fourth album was released. It is called 12 Memories . After Primrose's convalescence, the band had retired to a farmhouse in Scotland to write new songs. "It was like falling in love again," Payne said shortly before the album was released. 12 Memories also had three single releases: Re-Offender , The Beautiful Occupation and Love Will Come Through .
Healy wrote The Beautiful Occupation shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . Before that, he had always described himself as "apolitical". But the political events of 2001 changed his mind. Healy now supports the Make Poverty History movement . Travis also took part in the Live 8 concert.
At Christmas 2004, Travis was part of Band Aid 20 along with Radiohead , U2 , the Sugababes , The Darkness and other artists . They sang a new version of Do They Know It's Christmas? The proceeds went to children in the third world .
On May 4, 2007, Travis released her fifth studio album, The Boy with No Name, after a three-year absence . The album was preceded by the single Closer , in whose music video Travis fan Ben Stiller can be seen. The singles Selfish Jean and My Eyes also followed .
After the band initially only appeared in smaller bars at the beginning of the year, they began recording their new album in early 2008. Ode to J. Smith was named after her song J. Smith ; In addition, many songs on the album are about nameless characters (Fran Healy: “ The album is called Ode to J. Smith partly giving a heads up to the key song and partly because all the songs are written about nameless characters or to nameless characters. ”) . On September 15th, the first single Something Anything was released. Two weeks later, on September 29, 2008, the album Ode to J. Smith was released .
The two band members Fran Healy and Andrew Dunlop toured North America and Canada in October 2009 under the title An Evening With Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop - A Chronological Acoustical Journey through the Travis Back Catalog . This resulted in the publication of a compilation with the same title in January 2010 . This is currently only available on the US mail order website Amazon, as a CD or download, and directly on the band's homepage.
As a teaser for a new single, the song Another Guy was released on March 20, 2013 as a free download on the band's official website. For this purpose, Travis probably intentionally produced a technically rather poorly executed video in an amateur style (e.g. poor keying of the recordings in front of the green screen , shaky zooms with the camera, noticeable jump cuts , axis jumps ). The band continues the series of bizarre music videos that make many fans smile.
In April 2013 the band announced their seventh studio album Where You Stand for August 2013. On April 30, 2013, the first single was released with the song of the same name Where You Stand together with a new music video.
In December 2015, Everything at Once was released and an album of the same name was announced for April 29, 2016. German actor Daniel Brühl plays in the video for the song . The second single, 3 Miles High , was released in January 2016, followed by Radio Song in April and Magnificent Time in May.
style
Stylistically, Travis can be assigned to Britpop or Post-Britpop, although they have developed from the distinctive sound of Britpop since the album The Boy with No Name . Features of alternative rock are also occasionally present, for example on the album "Ode to J. Smith". Furthermore, the band had a great influence on later bands like Coldplay and Keane , whose path to success was paved by Travis.
reception
Chris Martin , singer and guitarist of the British band Coldplay , said in an interview that without Travis his band would probably never have existed.
