Treidelsteine are historical milestones on the bank of the former Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal in Bavaria .

The stones used to be used as orientation for the namesake towers and shipmen. The actual kilometers begin at the beginning of the canal in Kelheim and end in Bamberg . All towing stones were always placed on the right-hand side (towards Kelheim-Bamberg) of the canal next to the towpath .

Today many of these stones are lost, damaged or badly weathered. Some of them have been replaced by modern replicas. Some of the large Treidelsteine are designated as architectural monuments by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments . Sometimes the stones stood in the way of today's traffic routing and were moved. For example, kilometer stone 140 was removed in the 1970s when the former canal bed was built over with the Frankenschnellweg and initially moved to Erlangen , where it was completely ignored. It was brought back to Baiersdorf in 2003 as a "gift" and was then placed again near the train station.

Large treid stones

Every ten kilometers there is / was a large stone with a label. The inscription carved there shows the distance from Kelheim, to Bamberg and to the next largest city. Most of them are cylinders made of castle sandstone , measuring about 175 centimeters in height and 45 centimeters in diameter. The round shape is based on the Roman model, is slightly conical and the tip is rounded. However, there are also smaller specimens.

Small treid stones

Every kilometer there is a small stone. This is also made of castle sandstone in a round shape and measures around 45 centimeters in height and 25 centimeters in diameter. Only the distance to Kelheim in kilometers was carved into the small stones as a number.
