Ginnheim is an above-ground station of the Frankfurt U-Bahn and the Frankfurt am Main tram . It is located on Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse in Ginnheim . Ginnheim is the end point of the A route and tram line 16.

history

The station was opened together with the line from Bockenheimer Warte to Ginnheim between 1911 and 1914. At that time the station was still called Waldgasse . Tram line 19 ran from Ginnheim via Bockenheimer Warte and Mendelssohnstrasse to the main station . Line 19 has continued to Haardtwaldplatz since 1986. In 1989 a direct connection was created between the parking lots at the stadium and the exhibition center . In the following year, the northern branches of the line 16 and 19 were swapped. With the opening of the U4 extension in 2001, line 16 between Ginnheim and the main train station was to be closed. But only line 19 was omitted; line 16 remained in its previous form.

On May 26, 1978, the A-route from the Roman city to Ginnheim was opened as the last section of the Ginnheim branch . At that time, the U1 underground trains ran from Theaterplatz (today: Willy-Brandt-Platz ) via Heddernheim and the north-west town to Ginnheim. The section between Römerstadt and Ginnheim is an elevated railway section . It is the only above-ground section of the Frankfurt subway network that has been built according to full subway criteria.

On September 29, 1984, the first Frankfurt Main Tunnel went into operation between Theaterplatz and Südbahnhof . Since then, all lines on the A route have ended there.

On December 12, 2010 the Riedbergspange between Kalbach and Niederursel was opened. This is part of the D-route from Riedberg via Nordwestzentrum, Ginnheim, Bockenheimer Warte , Hauptbahnhof and Niederrad to Schwanheim . The U9 has been running between Nieder-Eschbach, Riedberg and Ginnheim since the opening of the Riedbergspange. The original plan was to connect the underground from Riedberg via Ginnheim and Bockenheim to the main station. However, this project failed because of the plans discontinued in 2005 to close the gap between Ginnheim and Bockenheim.

The station was rebuilt in spring 2015. Since then, passengers have been able to board the trams and underground trains without steps, provided the latter stop at platform 3. The central platform of tracks 4 and 5 can only be used without barriers when using 3-car trains, as the last quarter of the platform is only 56 cm high. In November 2017, the last quarter of the platform was also rebuilt, so that tracks 4 and 5 can now also be used for 4-car trains.

business

Today the Ginnheim underground station is served by lines U1 and U9 of the Frankfurt underground and line 16 of the Frankfurt tram . These share a five-track shared station. Platforms 1 (departure towards Offenbach city limits ) and 2 (arrival; only exit) are available for the tram . The underground trains stop on tracks 3 to 5, which are designed as head tracks. There is a direct connection between the underground and trams. In addition to the two underground and tram lines, the Ginnheim underground station is also served by the Frankfurt city bus routes 39 and 64 and the night bus route n2.

Incidents

On Saturday, April 5, 2014 at around 8 p.m., a train on the U9 line derailed at the station because it rammed the buffer stop due to an entrance that was too fast. According to a spokeswoman, the cause of the accident was the driver's health problems. Of the 50 passengers, 9 were slightly injured, as was the driver. They were taken to nearby hospitals. The police put the damage at 500,000 euros.
