Urs Müller-Plantenberg

Urs Müller-Plantenberg (born February 28, 1937 in Marienburg , West Prussia) is a German sociologist and university professor. From 2004 to 2007 he was Professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Warsaw .

Life

Müller-Plantenberg attended elementary school in Marienburg between 1943 and 1947 and, after fleeing, in Weißenfels an der Saale. From 1947 to 1956 he attended the Friedrichsgymnasium in Kassel . He first studied physics and politics in Marburg , then from 1957 to 1964 mathematics, history and sociology at the Free University of Berlin . In 1964 he passed the state examination for the office of the student council in mathematics and history. From 1964 to 1968 he was an assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.

In the 1960s, Urs Müller-Plantenberg was a member of the SDS ; in 1965 he was expelled from the SPD . He was also a member of the Republican Club . In 1970 Müller-Plantenberg received his doctorate in history from the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on the German Liberal Party after the fall of Bismarck. From 1971 to 2002 he was then a research assistant at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin , interrupted by visiting professorships in Chile and Bielefeld, for example.

In 1973 he was co-founder of the "Chile-Nachrichten", from 1978 on Latin America News , where he was editor for a long time. In 1974 he was also co-founder of the Chile-Latin America Research and Documentation Center ( FDCL ). Both the Latin America News and the FDCL are based in Berlin's Mehringhof .

In 1981 he completed his habilitation in sociology at the Free University of Berlin.

After retiring from the FU, he was Professor of Sociology at the Centrum Studiów Latynoamerykanskich (CESLA, Center for Latin American Studies) at the University of Warsaw between 2004 and 2007 . Müller-Plantenberg has written and edited numerous publications on the politics and sociology of Latin America.

Urs Müller-Plantenberg has been married to the Latin Americanist Clarita Müller-Plantenberg since 1966 . The marriage has two children. The couple lives in Berlin-Friedenau .
