Vasile Măstăcan

Vasile Ionel Măstăcan (born November 5, 1968 in Podu Turcului , Bacău County ) is a former Romanian rower who was second in the 1992 Olympics and eighth in 2001 .

Athletic career

The 1.93 m tall Vasile Măstăcan was at the Junior World Championships in 1986 fifth in the four without a helmsman . In 1992 he moved into the Romanian eighth and won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Barcelona , 0.14 seconds behind the Canadians. In the following year, the Germany eight won the 1993 World Championships in Račice u Štětí with over two seconds ahead of the Romanians. After a year break, Vasile Măstăcan rowed in 1995 in the Romanian four-man without a helmsman and finished twelfth at the World Championships in Tampere . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta Claudiu Marin , Dorin Alupei , Dimitrie Popescu and Vasile Măstăcan rowed in the Romanian foursome to fifth place.

In 1998 Vasile Măstăcan finished fifth in the foursome at the World Championships in Cologne . A year later at the World Championships in St. Catharines , he started in two boat classes. In the four without a helmsman, he took eighth place. In the four with a helmsman, the boat from the United States won ahead of the British, the Romanian crew with Ovidiu Cornea , Vasile Măstăcan, Valentin Robu , Nicolae Țaga and helmsman Dumitru Răducanu won the bronze medal. The following year, Măstăcan reached sixth place with eighth at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. At the 2001 World Championships in Lucerne, the Romanian eighth won the title ahead of the Croats and the Germans. This was the first ever world title for the Romanian men's eighth. At the World Championships in 2002 Măstăcan finished eighth with eighth.
