The barrage of the Fulda in Wahnhausen

Wahnhausen is a district of the municipality of Fuldatal in northern Hesse ( Germany ).

Geographical location

Wahnhausen is a few kilometers northeast of Kassel on the Fulda . This is dammed up into an elongated lake by the large Wahnhausen barrage , which you can use to get to Lower Saxony on foot or by bike . The village is located on a slope north of the river, so that almost every inhabitant can look out over the river valley with the federal highway 3 , which affects the village . The closest neighbor in the municipality is Simmershausen to the west .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1107 as Wanenhusun in a document in the Hersfeld monastery archive. There is also a document in which Wahnhausen is mentioned between 880 and 889, but this is a forgery.

In the beginning the river Fulda with its abundance of fish was the most important source of food as well as the main settlement area of the probably swampy valley. The delusion houses - also popularly known Abutzen like fish called - had in the Middle Ages, in the meantime, the biggest fishing rights in North Hessen. Furthermore, Wahnhausen was connected to its surroundings by the river, because at that time there was no road leading into the village. The river also gave the residents the opportunity to work as ship pullers.

When, in 1247, the Duchy of Braunschweig incorporated Wahnhausen and other lands in the area without justified claims, the village came under the jurisdiction of Brunswick, but the land remained the property of the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel . This status lasted for 584 years.

It was not until December 23, 1831 that Wahnhausen, with its then 267 inhabitants, came under the jurisdiction of the state of Hesse through a border-clarifying treaty between the Kingdom of Hanover and the Electorate of Hesse . As a result of industrialization in nearby Kassel, the farming and fishing village developed into a community of workers who enjoyed the quiet location of their village.

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Fuldatal was created on January 1, 1970 through the voluntary amalgamation of the previously independent municipalities Ihringshausen, Simmershausen, Wahnhausen, Knickhagen and Wilhelmshausen. As a result, Wahnhausen became a part of the large community of Fuldatal. Ihringshausen became the seat of administration.

In 2007, the 900th anniversary was celebrated with many festivities and historic market activity.
