Rothwesten is a district of the municipality of Fuldatal in the northern Hessian district of Kassel .

Around 2500 people live in Rothwesten, the area covers 901 hectares (as of 2009). On the site of the former Rothwesten air base , the currency reform of West Germany was prepared in top secret as part of the 1948 currency conclave. The village is well known for its currency museum and the Rothwesten public observatory on the Häusensberg .

Rothwesten is a few kilometers south of the Reinhardswald . The village is located between the Fuldataler districts of Knickhagen in the northeast, Wahnhausen in the southeast and Simmershausen in the south. North of Roth west lies the small town of Immenhausen belonging Holzhausen , east-southeast of the village or beyond the near Fulda which to Staufenberg in Lower Saxony scoring Speele , southwest of the Kassel bordering town Vellmar and west is the town Espenau . The village spreads out between the valleys of Osterbach in the northeast, Fulda in the east and south and Espe in the south and southwest. The village includes the "Gut Winterbüren" (owned by the Barons Waitz von Eschen ) in the northwest and the "Gut Eichenberg" in the east-southeast.

In 1948, in the so-called “Conclave of Rothwesten”, the currency reform of West Germany was prepared. In a building of some east-northeast of the village on the "Eichenberg" located aviator Horst (later Fritz-Erler barracks of the Armed Forces ) met in the "House Poznan" from April 21 to June 8, 1948 under strengster secrecy leading bankers, economists and envoys of the Western Allies to prepare and organize the introduction of the Deutsche Mark . The D-Mark was finally introduced as part of the currency reform on June 20, 1948 in the three Western Allied zones of Germany, which later became the Federal Republic of Germany.

Rothwesten was incorporated into the municipality of Fuldatal on August 1, 1972 as part of the regional reform in Hesse by virtue of state law.

The staff of the Air Defense Brigade 100 , which was last stationed in the Fritz Erler Barracks , was disbanded on December 31, 2007; The light anti-aircraft missile battery 300 was relocated to Hardheim and the anti-aircraft reconnaissance battery 100 was relocated to Putlos and placed under the 6th anti-aircraft training regiment as the 8th / 6th anti-aircraft training regiment. With the dissolution of the Air Defense Brigade 100, the history of the Rothwesten military airfield ended after more than 70 years . The area of ​​the former barracks is now available for subsequent civil use.
