Werner Goez (born July 13, 1929 in Frankfurt am Main , † July 13, 2003 in Sterzing ) was a German historian .

Werner Goez studied history, art history, musicology and German literature in Frankfurt from 1948. His main academic teacher was Paul Kirn . In 1954 he received his doctorate under Kirn with a study of intellectual history and political theories in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period. In 1960 he completed his habilitation in Frankfurt with a legal and constitutional history paper on the compulsory loan . Since 1964 he was professor of history, first in Würzburg , then in Erlangen , where he held the chair for medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences from 1969 to 1997. His scientific assistant was Dieter Hägermann from 1967 to 1974 . From 1965 to 1972 Goez was a member of the school committee of the West German Rectors' Conference and from 1972 to 1988 chairman of the library committee of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He died unexpectedly in July 2003 while on a trip to Italy in Sterzing.

In his scientific work he mainly dealt with the period of the High Middle Ages. His work on the political theory of the Translatio imperii (1958) and on the feudal principle of mandatory lending (1962) became fundamental. Goez was considered a connoisseur of the medieval history of Italy, especially Tuscany and the early humanists. His paperback published in 1975 on Italy from the sixth to the sixteenth century saw several editions. He also excelled scientifically in the subject areas of the investiture controversy and reform papacy , especially on Pope Gregory VII . His book Lebensbilder aus dem Mittelalter (1998), published in 1998, contains thirty-four brief biographical sketches. For the critical edition of all documents and letters from Margravine Mathilde von Canossa , he and his wife Elke Goez have been collecting material from more than ninety archives and libraries since 1986 . The edition was published in 1998 by the Monumenta Germaniae Historica and comprises 139 documents that can be regarded as genuine as well as 15 forgeries and 115 otherwise verifiable or accessible deperdita .

Goez was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class . He also received the Bavarian Order of Merit and was Cavaliere ufficiale of the Italian Order of Merit as well as the first holder of the Arco for services to the cultural relations between Italy and the Federal Republic of Germany.
