Yecla is a southeastern Spanish city ​​with 34,432 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the north of the province of Murcia in the autonomous region of Murcia of the same name .

location

Yecla is approx. 86 km (driving distance) north of the city of Murcia and 60 km (air line) from the Mediterranean Sea at an altitude of approx. 600  m. The climate in winter is moderate, in summer it is warm to hot; the low amounts of precipitation (approx. 410 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Yecla is in the rural area of ​​the province of Murcia; mainly grain, almonds, olives and wine are grown. Livestock breeding also plays a not insignificant role. Small traders, craftsmen and service companies of all kinds have settled in the village.

history

The oldest finds that testify to the presence of humans in the region are dated around 30,000 years ago; At the 1068 m high Monte Arabí there are Neolithic rock paintings . Also Iberian remains have been found, and from the Roman period , the ruins date from a total of five farms ( villa rustica ) . Visigoth finds are missing. In the years after 711 the area was overrun by the Moors , but the first permanent settlement on the castle hill called Yakka did not emerge until the 11th century. After the recapture ( reconquista ) of the region by Castilian troops under Alfonso X in 1243, the quasi-independent was Taifa Kingdom of Murcia in a Christian kingdom converted, which, however closely with the Crown of Castile was intertwined. During this time a new settlement was formed at the foot of the mountains, which was named Yecla.

  • The construction of the Basílica de la Purísima Concepción began in 1775; however, it was not completed until 1868. Its dome , resting on a round, windowed drum, is visible from afar because of its blue and white stripe pattern. The group of sculptures of the Virgen de las Angustias by Francisco Salzillo (1764) is located in a chapel .
  • The Iglesia del Hospitalico was part of the city's former hospital.
  • The Teatro Concha Segura was built in the 1880s on the site of the former municipal bread house.
  • The interesting Museo Arqueológico presents prehistoric, Iberian, Roman and medieval finds.
Surroundings
  • From the medieval settlement on the fortress hill, only a few remains of the wall have survived.
  • Nearby is the two-tower church of the Santuario del Castillo from the 19th century.
  • At the Los Torrejones archaeological site about 3 km east of Yecla, the foundations of the Roman villa are clearly visible. Remnants of mosaics were also uncovered. The area was also inhabited in the Almohad period .
