In an east-west direction, the route crosses Austria for almost its entire length and touches the federal states of Lower Austria , Burgenland , Styria , Salzburg , Carinthia , Tyrol and Vorarlberg , and shorter sections run through Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein .

It takes two to two and a half months to walk the entire route (excluding rest days).
