Under the designation "Migratory bird sanctuaries along the coast of the Yellow Sea - Gulf of Bohai" , several intertidal zones in the Yellow Sea and in the area of the Gulf of Bohai on the coast of Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as natural heritage recorded. The application for the registration of the areas to be protected in the World Heritage should be made in two phases. The first phase of the application was successful in 2019. The second phase of the application is planned for later.

location

The bird sanctuaries include the Wadden Sea on the Yellow Sea coast and the Gulf of Bohai. The sediments of the Wadden Sea come from China's major rivers such as the Yellow River , Yangtze , Yalu , Liao He , Hai He etc. The parts of the Wadden Sea recognized as World Heritage under the first phase are in the city districts of Sheyang , Tinghu , Dafeng and Dongtai in the prefecture-level city of Yancheng in Jiangsu Province in China and include several nature reserves. It is the largest tidal area on the west coast of the Pacific. The Wadden Sea as it is today was essentially formed before 1855, when the Yellow River shifted its course to the north.

Biological peculiarities

The bird sanctuaries are part of the largest tidal Wadden Sea in the world and one of the most biologically diverse coastlines in the world. They consist u. a. from deltas, sandbanks, rocks, salt pans, fish ponds and rice fields. The area is a residence area for endangered and rare migratory and waterbirds, such as sandpipers , spotted green thighs , great knots and curlews .

In the application published by UNESCO and written by China for the recognition of bird sanctuaries as World Heritage, the reason for the inclusion as World Heritage is the importance of the local Wadden Sea as a gathering, resting and nesting place for migratory birds on their way between East Asia and Australia and as a breeding site for numerous fish and crustacean species mentioned. The bird sanctuaries are therefore of global importance as an ecosystem for these partly threatened animal species.
