Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw University of Engineering and Technology (NED University of Engineering and Technology) is the only public-sector Engineering University in Karachi City, which is the largest city and the industrial hub of Pakistan. Its primary focus is on teaching and training Engineers for Pakistan's thriving industry. As such research is only a secondary priority. It is the first choice of high-school graduates willing to become Professional Engineers in the province of Sindh. As such admissions are extremely competitive, and only the most talented students get a seat. NED alumni has established itself in all major industries and establishments of Pakistan, and multinationals both at home and abroad. The graduates have been earning admissions for higher education in the top-ranking universities of the world.

History

NED University of Science & Technology was founded in 1921 as Prince of Wales Engineering College in the honour of the visiting British Prince, to the then British-ruled India. The foundation of this new college, which is now the oldest & one of the most prestegious of the engineering institutes in Pakistan, was laid with the help of donations of many dignitaries and philanthropist figures of Karachi city including substantial financial assistance from heirs of Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw on his first death anniversary . The College was renamed as NED Engineering College in 1924 in honour of the philanthropist Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw. After Pakistan's independence in 1947, the provincial government of Sindh took over the management of the College and renamed it to NED Government Engineering College, Karachi.

The College was affiliated with the following Universities before it was granted full University status:

Plans to move the college from the downtown area to a new 400,000 m² (96 acres) site adjoining the University of Karachi were carried out with World Bank assistance in 1975. The college was upgraded to an additional campus of the University of Karachi in 1976, and finally raised to university level on March 1, 1977.

Currently the university is offering 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) programs in 21 fields of specialization as well as Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) and Doctoral (PhD) programmes in its most established departments.

Faculties and Departments

The University currently offers graduate and post-graduate degrees in several engineering disciplines. It has four main faculties:

  • Bio-Medical Engineering Department
    • Medical Engineering
    • Bio-Engineering

Facilities

NED University has a well developed infrastructure, which has been evolving over the years to meet the challenges of the modern technology and information based industry. The primary focus of the university has been to train professional engineers rather than research.

Laboratories

All departments have their own set of laboratories primarily employed in teaching undergraduate students. Every department has approximately five to six labs, with equipment and facilities for one particular sub-field. Apart from their own labs, students benefit from multi-disciplinary courses for which lab training is conducted in laboratories of other departments.

Some of the departments have been receiving active funding from the government during the past few years, which has helped them upgrade their labs with the latest Engineering equipment available.

Research And Training Programmes

The NED University of Engineering & Technology has accelerated its efforts to contribute to international research and training programmes that are being developed through co-operation between East and West. Fast developing field of science and technology require support, development and use of educational technology, distance education, computer based training and open-learning schemes, and enhancement of the learning process through the use of modern Information Technology (IT). To achieve these goals the University has established a Centre for Continuing Engineering Education (CCEE) to cater the educational and training needs of the existing Engineering Work Force.

Internet Service

The Internet Centre is equipped with 4 Dell Servers one each for DNS, Proxy, Web and Mail; it has state-of-the-art Cisco Routers and Access Servers, with Cisco Firewall and US Robotics Modems. Computers are connected to each other through high-speed data communications network forming the Internet backbone. The backbone for the internet is taken from Global One, which has a parallel backbone to the NSF resulting in very fast responses. The network has been designed so that educational institutions and corporate institutions can also be connected using high speed lines.

Other Facilities

Some other facilities like, the Central Library with over 95,000 books, one centrally air -conditioned Auditorium of 600 seating capacity , one Hostel for 200 students, Medical Centre, Mosque, Student Cafeterias, Gymnasium and some outdoor sports facilities are also available in the campus.
