There is strong doubt about the long-term durability of Tribe due to management decisions. Tribe networks, an online social service, has a very devout following, that voluntarily participated in a paid membership service. This pay service was created by request of the membership, an unusual step for free-service members to take. There were promises to members who bought annual memberships to provide benefits, such as a tee shirt touting Tribe. Delivery of these services has taken to September of 2008, from an originating date of December 2007. As of September 2008, there are significant numbers of members who have yet to receive the promised benefits.

Tribe has faced many problems, including lack of funding for existing infrastructure and upgrades. Tribe has for some time limped along with only one paid employee, Mr. Darren Mckeeman. Mr. Mckeeman quit after being verbally abused by Mr. Pincus on September 11th, 2008. This throws the existence of Tribe in doubt, due to ongoing problems that exist in the hard and software aspects of Tribe.

A business such as tribe, with a dedicated following that volunteers to pay for an existing free service, is an unusual, and almost unique, business. The lack of even minimal investment in keeping the business solvent and usable is a pity, considering the devotion of those users.

Mark Pincus is the CEO and a co-founder of Zynga, an online social gaming network. Previously he was a co-founder and CEO of Tribe Networks.

He grew up in Chicago. After business school, he spend a short stint working at TCI and Liberty Media out of Denver, but left to launch Freeloader, and moved to Washington, D.C. and subsequently San Francisco. After selling Freeloader, Pincus launched Support.com (today publicly traded as Supportsoft nasd: sprt), and then Tribe.net.

Mark Pincus caused controversy in the blogosphere in July 2006 when he disclosed that SixApart was attempting to censor his blog posting, by requesting that he not write about Murry Gunty, a self-confessed election fraudster while at Harvard Business School.

Mark holds a Bachelors of Science in Economics from the Wharton School and a MBA from Harvard Business School.
