The program consists of sciences, math, and technology of today's world. It allows students use these concepts through real world applications, and it prepares them for careers in science and math, and allows students to take courses usually presented in college levels. (Math Modeling, Advanced Math Topics, Statistics, Biotechnology, Microscopy, Genetics...)

Students participating in the Specialty Center program are required to conduct independent or collaborative original research and to enter their work in at least one competition annually. Students develop skills in research methodologies through their science and mathematics coursework, and their studies in such courses as Tools of Research, Research Applications, and AP Statistics. Their research is conducted at a variety of locations: the Specialty Center facility, student's home, laboratories of local universities and industries. Students in this program participate in annual science fairs, including the Metro Richmond Science Fair and the Virginia Junior Academy of Science (VJAS). Many winners from Godwin have advanced to the State Science & Engineering Fair and the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF). Additionally, Mills E. Godwin has contributed 4 students to the Virginia delegation to the International Space Olympics held in Russia.

Center students take the Center required core courses in addition to the courses taken in the comprehensive high school for the advanced studies diploma. In the junior and senior years, Center students continue to study core concepts in science and mathematics through Center courses, advanced placement (AP) coursework, and Center designed semester electives while engaging in research projects, mentorships, and field studies. Successful graduation from the program requires that students complete a minimum of 12 units of approved mathematics, science, research, and technology coursework to include the Center required core courses, AP statistics, and two Center electives.
Required Center Core Courses
Science Investigations I
The honors laboratory science curriculum investigates the core concepts of biology infused with introductory chemistry, mathematics, technology, fieldwork, laboratory experiences and student independent research.

Science Investigations II
This honors laboratory science curriculum investigates the core concepts of inorganic chemistry with an introduction to organic and biochemistry in an integrated approach infused with mathematics, technology, fieldwork, laboratory experiences and student independent research.

Science Investigations III
This honors laboratory science curriculum investigates the core concepts of physics and astronomy through integrated studies infused with mathematics, technology, fieldwork, student independent research and laboratory experiences.

Mathematical Investigations I
This honors geometry course also examines the applications of mathematics to science through probability, statistical analysis, right triangle trigonometry and discrete mathematics.

Mathematical Investigations II
This honors Algebra II course examines the applications of mathematics to science through problem solving and mathematical modeling.

Mathematical Investigations III
This honors precalculus and trigonometry curriculum investigates the applications of mathematics to science through function analysis, statistics and discrete mathematics.

Tools of Research
Students develop research skills through data collection, electronic accessing of information, experimental design projects, statistical analysis of data, research competitions, presentation opportunities, critical readings and scientific writings.
Center Elective Courses

Genetics & Biotechnology Research Applications
This one year honors laboratory course investigates fundamental areas of modern genetics & biotechnology. Students experience microbiology and molecular genetics procedures and explore applications of these procedures in medical, agricultural, and environmental fields.

Visualizing Science Through Technology
Students enrolled in this year-long honors elective learn how to use the powerful computer technology of data acquisition, digital image processing, and data analysis to investigate concepts in mathematics and science. Instruction includes: introduction to image processing theory, techniques of creating, displaying, enhancing and analyzing digital images using real-time data sets, and the real world applications of image processing. Students do extensive research projects and assignments for honors credit.

Mathematical Modeling & Discrete Topics
The honors year elective develops mathematical models that solve problems from the biological and physical sciences, economics, and political science. The models use appropriate mathematical concepts from game, voting, and graph theories, as well as algebra, geometry, precalculus, trigonometry, and calculus. Also, topics such as queues, optimization, and growth equations are studied. Students are required to create a comprehensive project.

Microbiology & Techniques of Microscopy
This one year course is designed for students with specific project goals utilizing microscope technologies as it applies to microbiology and various other fields. Fundamentals of microbiology lab techniques and the microbial impacts on human health and culture are explored. Light microscopy as well as electron microscopy will be explored to extend science content knowledge across the science curriculum as well as to develop further skills in data collection and microscopic techniques. Students will learn to prepare specimens, capture and develop images, and interpret data from microscopic samples of various materials.

Advanced Topics in Mathematics Students explore a sampling of the following during a year-long honors course:

Number Theory the beauties and intricacies of pure mathematics by examining selected topics from the theory of numbers. Topics will include: divisibility, congruences, the Euler phi-function, Fermat's Theorem primitive roots, and Diophantine equations.

Linear Algebra
Students examine the basic concepts of linear algebra. Topics will include: systems of linear equations, vector spaces, linear dependence, bases, dimensions, linear transformations, matrices, determinants, quadratic forms, othogonal reduction to diagonal form, and eigenvalues.

Introduction to Probability Theory
Students examine the basic concepts of the mathematical theory of probability. Topics will include: finite and infinite sample spaces, discrete random variables, continuous random variables, mathematical expectation, functions of random variables, and sampling distributions.

Capital improvement funds were allocated by the Henrico County School Board to provide for the construction of the Specialty Center facility at Godwin High School. All center classes are housed in the Specialty Center addition as well as an office area for student conferences and access to a printer. The addition also includes several classrooms and two large "wet labs". The center also contains a BL2, (Biological Level 2) safety hood and a dedicated room for work with bacterial isolates and genetic studies as well as a thermal cycler for PCR, gel and protein electrophoresis equipment, bacteriological incubators and a gas chromatograph. The lab facilities enable students to perform experiments without interruption on specialized equipment.

In 1998, the addition of a scanning electron microscope was made possible through a partnership with Infineon Technologies-Richmond (White Oak Semiconductor).
