Leon Bix Beiderbecke (March 10, 1903 &ndash; August 6, 1931) was an American jazz cornetist and composer, as well as a skilled classical and jazz pianist.

Thanks for your comment at Pakistan / India -- emotional edit warring on the Talk page of Dentistry. I've revised my suggested text there according to your comments.
One of the leading names in 1920s jazz, Beiderbecke's career was cut short by chronic poor health, exacerbated by alcoholism. Critic Scott Yanow describes Beiderbecke as the "[p]ossessor of a beautiful, distinctive tone and a strikingly original improvising style. Beiderbecke's chief competitor among cornetists in the '20s was Louis Armstrong, but (due to their different sounds and styles) one really could not compare them."

Only slightly related: There is a marvelous illustration in Figure 5 in the source 'Suddick, Richard P. and Norman O. Harris, 1990' (PDF) of toothache caused by the tooth worm. If you (or someone you know of) know anything about getting illustrations released and uploaded to Commons, this one would be great to have, to illustrate dentistry, toothache, pain or other articles. It's from a 1985 illustrated history of dentistry (Ring, M. E.) and shows a French carving from about 1780. I get a toothache just looking at the picture. --Hordaland (talk) 21:04, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Early life
: The toothworm picture is visible at several websites. Here is one (at Creighton University Medical Center website). I don't know enough about image copyright to answer your question. I'll ask someone who does. Axl (talk) 21:58, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Beiderbecke was born in Davenport, Iowa to a middle-class family of German origin. As a teenager he would sneak off to the banks of the Mississippi to listen to bands play on the riverboats arriving from the south.

Well, I think this image is too old. If we have a source says that date for publishing, then, it is definitely under public domain; And he can upload it directly to Wikimedia Commons. --OsamaK 14:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Illness frequently kept Beiderbecke out of school, and his grades suffered. He attended Davenport High School briefly, but his parents felt that enrolling him in the exclusive Lake Forest Academy, north of Chicago in Lake Forest, Illinois, as a boarding student would provide him with both the necessary faculty attention and discipline to improve his academic performance. However, the change of scenery did not improve Beiderbecke's academic record, as the only subjects in which he displayed interest were music and sports. Bix began going into Chicago to catch the hot jazz bands at clubs and speakeasies. He often failed to return to his dormitory before curfew, and sometimes stayed off-campus the next day. Beiderbecke was dismissed from the academy due to his academic failings and extracurricular activities. His time now free, he began his musical career.

:Thanks for checking, both of you! The one image I got uploaded to Commons, someone else had to do for me - I'm really not capable, and too old to learn. I'll ask Osama if he can do it. --Hordaland (talk) 12:12, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Career
Beiderbecke first recorded with his band the Wolverine Orchestra in 1924. They were usually called the Wolverines, named for "Wolverine Blues" by Jelly Roll Morton because they played it so often. He became a sought-after musician in Chicago and New York City. He made innovative and influential recordings with Frankie Trumbauer ("Tram") and the Jean Goldkette Orchestra. When the Goldkette Orchestra disbanded after their last recording ("Clementine (From New Orleans)"), in September 1927, Bix and Trumbauer, a 'C' melody and alto saxophone player, briefly joined Adrian Rollini's band at the Club New Yorker, New York. Beiderbecke then moved on to the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, the most popular and highest paid band of the day.

Beiderbecke also played piano, sometimes switching from cornet for a chorus or two during a song (e.g., "For No Reason at All in C", 1927). He wrote several compositions for the piano, and recorded one of them, "In a Mist" (after it was transcribed from his improvisations by the Goldkette/Whiteman arranger Bill Challis). His piano compositions include "In A Mist", "Flashes", "In The Dark" and "Candlelights." These were later recorded by (among others) Jess Stacy, Bunny Berigan, Jimmy and Marian McPartland, Dill Jones and Ralph Sutton.

Death
Beiderbecke had suffered health problems from an early age and his health declined further in his adult years. He toured relentlessly, and consumed excessive alcohol,
much of it low quality, and often somewhat poisonous, Prohibition Era alcohol. As a result, his stage performances began to suffer. Bandleader Paul Whiteman and his musicians were frustrated with Beiderbecke's behavior; another trumpet player famously wrote the reminder "Wake up Bix" shortly before Beiderbecke's solo on a sheet music transcript.

RfA thanks
His spirits also suffered due to declining work around the New York City area. In 1929 bandleader Paul Whiteman sent Beiderbecke back home to Davenport, Iowa, to recover from a breakdown (caused by alcoholism, related physical problems and the stress of touring). His treatment was initially successful, but failed later. During this recuperation period, he discovered in his parents' home a cabinet full of all his phonograph records he sent back home for his parents--all unplayed, after pleading for his parents' respect and recognition through his letters. In an interview in Episode 3 of Jazz, Richard Sudhalter noted that while his mother was slightly supportive, his father was not. Bix was cutting an increasingly sad figure, and while he played intermittently over the next two years, when he was well enough to travel, neither he nor his playing was ever the same.

In late July or early August 1931, he took up residence at 43-30 46th Street, Sunnyside, Queens, New York City, where he went on his last drinking binge. He died in his Queens apartment alone on August 6, 1931, at 9:30 in the evening, just 28 years old. While the official cause of his death was "lobar pneumonia" and "brain edema", Beiderbecke actually died of an alcoholic seizure during delirium tremens.
WP:VG where VG = video games. Several comments and mentions in the relevant RfA cite and direct the acronym. VG Heavy simply means a bias of contributional effort towards that one area. Plutonium27 (talk) 18:54, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

The production of bathtub gin was tremendous during Prohibition and continued widely until the Repeal of Prohibition some 18 months after Bix's death (or until practical enforcement of Prohibition laws stopped before the official time that the 21st Amendment went into effect), so up to the time that Bix went on his final bender he very likely drank large quantities of bathtub gin with Rotgut properties, since the most readily available alcohol at that time was illegal spirits, as opposed to industrial spirits that were illegally imported.

Beiderbecke is buried in a family plot in Oakdale Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa. Although his penchant for imbibing was legendary, tales of the examining coroner getting drunk from the alcohol fumes are apocryphal.

Thanks for science barnstar!
Beiderbecke absorbed the music he heard of New Orleans jazz cornetists. He was influenced by Nick LaRocca of the Original Dixieland Jass Band. The LaRocca influence is evident in a number of Beiderbecke's recordings (especially the covers of O.D.J.B. songs.) Beiderbecke also absorbed patterns from Joe "King" Oliver, and clarinetist Leon Roppolo. Beiderbecke's famous two-note interjection on "Goose Pimples" suggests Freddie Keppard, among older New Orleans players.

Hi Axl, thanks for awarding me the science barnstar! Really much appreciated. --Slashme (talk) 06:39, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
According to many contemporaries, Beiderbecke was most influenced by Emmett Hardy, a highly regarded New Orleans cornetist of whom there are no existent recordings. Several fellow musicians said that Hardy's influence was very evident in Beiderbecke's early recordings with The Wolverines. New Orleans drummer Ray Bauduc heard Hardy's playing in the early 1920s and said that he was even more inspired than Beiderbecke.

Barnstar
Beiderbecke was also influenced by contemporary European music, such as the compositions of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, and similarly by American Impressionists, notably Eastwood Lane.

Many thanks for that. I'm glad you appreciate my efforts. <font face="Century Schoolbook">WilliamH (talk)</font> 20:18, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Beiderbecke is remembered today for his own individualistic style of jazz cornet playing, which moved away from his predecessors and influenced those who followed. As Louis Armstrong said, "Lots of cats tried to play like Bix; ain't none of them play like him yet."

reply
Influence on later musicians
Louis Armstrong once remarked that he never played the tune "Singin' the Blues" because he thought Beiderbecke's classic recording of the song should not be touched.

Please check my talk page for a reply. « <font face="Tahoma"><span style=color:DarkOliveGreen>Diligent Terrier</span> [[User talk:Diligent Terrier|<span style=color:Gray><small>[talk]</small>]]</span></font> 19:25, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
One follower was cornetist Jimmy McPartland, who replaced Beiderbecke in the 'Wolverine' Orchestra in late 1924. He continued to pay tribute to Beiderbecke throughout his long career (McPartland died in 1991).

Great power
Bix's influence was most noticeable amongst white musicians, but black players also fell under his spell, notably trumpeters and cornetists John Nesbitt (of McKinney's Cotton Pickers), Rex Stewart of (Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra, Duke Ellington's Orchestra), and Doc Cheatham of (Cab Calloway's Orchestra).

Thank you very, very much for reviewing the great power article. We've all worked very hard to bring it back up to snuff. I was beginning to think that it would never be reviewed, Best wishes. --Hobie (talk) 17:37, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
In the 1930s Bobby Hackett was widely billed as the "new Bix", especially after he reprised Bix's "I'm Coming Virginia" solo at Benny Goodman's famous 1938 Carnegie Hall concert.

Age
Miles Davis was fascinated by Beiderbecke's playing, and sought out people who had known and played with him. Davis' silvery tone and understated, "cool" phrasing clearly hark back to one aspect of Beiderbecke's style.

: It explains the naive and immature nature of the application. Tharnton isn't trying to make a point or deliberately disrupt RFA. He doesn't know any better.
The character Rick Martin in Dorothy Baker's novel Young Man With A Horn (1938) was partly based on Beiderbecke's life. The story was later adapted as a movie (1950) starring Kirk Douglas as Martin (with horn playing dubbed by Harry James). (According to some sources, first choice Bobby Hackett was passed over because of unreliability).
: I have no objection to young editors, administrators or even bureaucrats. Rather I measure the candidate by the nature of the contributions. Axl (talk) 20:20, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Young Man with a Horn was later parodied in the BBC radio series Round The Horne as "Young Horne With a Man", featuring "Bix Spiderthrust".

Beiderbecke's music is featured in three British comedy-drama television series, all written by Alan Plater: The Beiderbecke Affair (1984), The Beiderbecke Tapes (1987) and The Beiderbecke Connection (1988).

Name
There has been debate about the full name of Bix Beiderbecke: was he baptized Leon Bix or Leon Bismark (Bix being a shortened form of the latter). He was named after his father Leon Bismark Beiderbecke. From the early 1960s onwards, Beiderbecke's living relatives (notably his brother Charles "Burnie") forcefully claimed that his name had always been Leon Bix. This was accepted as a fact by Beiderbecke researchers Phil and Linda Evans.

::Even inappropriate candidates can have questions. 'Inappropriate' is an opinion, after all. <small><span style="border:1px solid black;padding:1px;"><i><font style="color:white;background:#4682b4;font-family:sans-serif;">&nbsp;Ase</font></i><i><font style="color:white;background:#4682b4;font-family:sans-serif;">nine&nbsp;</font></i></span></small> 20:53, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Other researchers, including Rich Johnson, have found documents showing his full name to be Leon Bismark. These include records from the Early First Presbyterian Church to which the family belonged, and from Tyler School, which Bix attended. In addition, the will of a relative, Mary Hill, named young Beiderbecke as a beneficiary. His mother signed for his receipt of her gift, writing "Leon Bismark Beiderbecke".

Thank you
Beiderbecke appeared to dislike his formal name from an early age. For example: in a letter to his mother when he was nine (1912), he signed it, "frome [sic] your Leon Bix Beiderbecke not Bismark Remeber [sic]." (this letter is reprinted in Evans & Evans pp 28-29). The family may have wanted to play down or avoid the more traditional German name of Bismarck during and after the tensions of World War I, when Germany was the enemy.

Thank you for the kind words over at my talk page. I left a response for you there as well. Also, wanted to say you definitely deserve that Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar award! Take care! ==Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice==
Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Question
Hello! Do you by chance remember the deletion of The Hell Diablo Hellfire mod (about a month ago)? You kindly asked us for more references. Now I have recreated the article on my user page with much more content and reference sources. Would you please have a look on it? What do you think about its current state? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:CAH81/The_Hell_mod CAH81 (talk) 18:59, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

: Yes, I do remember it. Your first reference (the Hungarian website) looks promising. However I can't read Hungarian so I don't know if it's a reliable source. The second reference is the web development team's homepage. The third reference (phrozen keep) looks like a message board for games developers: not a reliable source. The notability of the article hinges on the Hungarian reference. == Kurt and RFA ==

Thanks for your note. While Kurt's opposes are probably not given a great deal of weight, others do oppose per Kurt. As an RFA is a discussion, it is needful to refute and counter balance arguments like his, as ridiculous as the may seem to others. Once others have joined in making the same oppose argument, it gains weight by virtue of the nature of consensus. One must balance between consensus building discussion and being drawn into nowhere discussion. In the past, there was a group that opposed based on candidates not having a Featured Article. The discussion/consensus was this was not a valid oppose criterion, and it fell into disuse. More recently, Kurt has opposed based on self-noms. The community again begged to differ, and that oppose rationale fell into disuse. Now Kurt is using this one. It too will wear out, and he'll think of something else. Efforts have been made to try to adjust or control Kurt's behavior. That is not going to happen. Kurt will continue to stretch everyone's imagination. The project, by it's nature, will continue to let him have his say because the alternative (ban, topic ban) is the worse choice. I believe there have been RFC's and RFAr's in the past. They generally stirred up a lot of dust and raised a lot of blood pressures and changed nothing. We edit in the realm of ideas, and ideas have a power that transcends mere people and mere discussions. Those who disagree with Kurt's oppose rationales will continue to try to balance between consensus building and being drawn into futility. Cheers, and happy editing.<font color="#00ff00"> Dloh</font><font color="#bb00bb">cierekim </font> 14:20, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Oxygen toxicity
Thanks for your review of Oxygen toxicity. It's much appreciated. As you say, the article has developed from a diving perspective, not a medical one. == re: RfA Comments ==

Hello! To answer your observation: my RfA comments only came about because I normally arrived at those discussions at the midway point and felt I was contributing nothing of value by repeating the same “Support – great candidate” comments that 25 or 30 other editors said. The “wrong queue” comments came about just to be different, not to be funny. There is no “joke,” per se – it is just a small revolt against conformity. Of course, I only do that when I support a candidate – I never do that with oppose or neutral input, because I need to be serious in explaining why I cannot get behind a candidacy. == Oxygen toxicity revisited ==

Gene Hobbs and I have almost finished the re-write of Oxygen toxicity (many thanks for the barnstar, by the way!). As I still would like to get at least one scuba-related article to GA status, one of us will renominate it as GAC soon. I don't know whether you will be able to review it this time, but if you can't, could I ask you to have a pre-nomination look and spare a few minutes to let us know if the points you raised at Talk:Oxygen toxicity/GA2 need any further work. I do know I have to research the history of BPD and that there are still a number of short paragraphs. I think that's due to the fact that the article summarises CNS tox, pulmonary tox, BPD, ARDS and ROP and covers clinical and diving viewpoints. If I knew what I was tackling at the start, I think I'd have picked an easier topic! Anyway, don't worry if you're busy, but any observations & criticism are welcome. Dental ( + illustration)

Thanks for your comment at Pakistan / India -- emotional edit warring on the Talk page of Dentistry. I've revised my suggested text there according to your comments.

The toothworm picture is visible at several websites. Here is one (at Creighton University Medical Center website). I don't know enough about image copyright to answer your question. I'll ask someone who does. Axl (talk) 21:58, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! --Hordaland (talk) 22:36, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I think this image is too old. If we have a source says that date for publishing, then, it is definitely under public domain; And he can upload it directly to Wikimedia Commons. --OsamaK 14:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for checking, both of you! The one image I got uploaded to Commons, someone else had to do for me - I'm really not capable, and too old to learn. I'll ask Osama if he can do it. --Hordaland (talk) 12:12, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

RfA thanks

Thank you for participating in my RfA, which did not succeed with 30 in support, 28 in opposition and 6 neutral votes. Thanks again for the support!
My apologies, seems I made a huge cock-up here by not signing and linking the wrong RfA. Not going well. Anyway, my sincere apologies and my heart-felt thank you for the vote. Happy editing! —CycloneNimrodT@lk? 19:42, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

WP:VG

WP:VG where VG = video games. Several comments and mentions in the relevant RfA cite and direct the acronym. VG Heavy simply means a bias of contributional effort towards that one area. Plutonium27 (talk) 18:54, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, thanks for the explanation. Axl (talk) 18:56, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Most welcome you are. A read of the RfA and following up of the links that all contributors to the !vote give is always a Good Thing. In this case, there is nothing in itself against video games per se, its always the same when a candidate does their thing mainly in the one arena. In a not-RL place like VG, pains-in-the-arse like me are always gonna question the experience for an wannabe-admin who could find themselves up to their neck in RL-row shite. So, I (and many others) like to see some evidence of dealing with these WP RL aggravations, is all. All the best Plutonium27 (talk) 19:15, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks!

Thank you...

...for participating in my RfA, which closed with 119 in support, 4 neutral and 5 opposes. I'm honestly overwhelmed at the level of support that I've received from the community, and will do my best to maintain the trust placed in me. I 'm also thankful to those who opposed or expressed a neutral position, for providing clear rationales and superb feedback for me to build on. Age

I agree that he is an unsuitable candidate, but how does age come into this? Some of WP's best admins are some of WP's youngest.  Asenine  20:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

It explains the naive and immature nature of the application. Tharnton isn't trying to make a point or deliberately disrupt RFA. He doesn't know any better.
I have no objection to young editors, administrators or even bureaucrats. Rather I measure the candidate by the nature of the contributions. Axl (talk) 20:20, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: Optional questions

Why shouldn't I?  Asenine  20:23, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

The candidate was clearly inappropriate. Axl (talk) 20:25, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

And I myself made a conclusion jump that was unwarranted, which is why I backpeddled as quickly as I could. At least at an AfD these things can be adressed and a better article can be the result. I think Ice Blues will be around for a while now. It is at AfD's where I am myself able to do research and learn the merits or not of the pro and con votes. I was happy to help improve it and prove the erroneous tags as erroneous. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 18:06, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

We aim to create a featured topic for medicine, most likely to do with an infectious disease of some form (the proposals so far include polio and bacterial infections in general) and become the first medical featured topic. The proposal can be found here and further discussion can be found at the bottom of the WikiProject Medicine talk page. I've very much appreciate your comments and possibly support of such a proposal, if you'd be willing to take part! —CyclonenimT@lk? 13:41, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Just found the star you awarded me. I don't know what I've done to deserve it, but thanks all the same. Brianboulton (talk) 23:00, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Eh...

How are you not an admin yet? You have excellent article contributions and from your participation at RfA I haven't seen anything worrying.. —Cyclonenim (talk · contribs · email) 18:36, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you. I have strong reservations about the RFA process. Too often I see editors who miss the point when !voting. [Although I have been accused of the same. :-) ] The RFA process is currently under review. Unfortunately I missed my chance to contribute. I can think of a few situations where I would have found the admin tools helpful. However I am reluctant to apply under the current regulations. Axl (talk) 19:07, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hello! I just wanted to pass along my thanks for your support in my RfA from earlier this week. I hope I did not disappoint you. I am going on Wikibreak and I will let you know when or if I am back on the site -- I am trying to take time away to clear my thoughts and refocus on this and other priorities. Be well. Question

Yes, I do remember it. Axl ¤ [Talk] 20:26, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Kurt and RFA

Cheers, and happy editing. Oxygen toxicity

Thanks for your review of Oxygen toxicity. It's much appreciated. As you say, the article has developed from a diving perspective, not a medical one. Having looked through the GA criteria again, I'm still unsure where it fails those criteria, other than not complying with MOSMED. Anyway, I'll get back to work on a re-write using the MOSMED headings (if I can figure out what they all mean - jargon strikes!). I've answered your query about journal titles on the Oxygen toxicity talk page. Hope that helps. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 14:39, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

re: RfA Comments

Oxygen toxicity revisited

Cheers --RexxS (talk) 23:02, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
