In 2007, the Alaska Creamery Board recommended closing Matanuska Maid Dairy, an unprofitable state-owned business. According to advisors close to the campaign, McCain had originally wanted to select Lieberman, primarily on the advice of one of his national chairmen, Senator [[Lindsey Graham]] of [[South Carolina]]. McCain was reportedly concerned about reclaiming his image as a "maverick Republican" and wanted someone to shake up the ticket.
