This is accomplished through the delivery of law enforcement services, the operation of the Lee County Jail, and the provision of court security. Mike Scott was elected as the county's 12th sheriff in 2004. Under Florida law, The Sheriff is defined as a "constitutional officer" and derives his legal authority from the Constitution of the State of Florida. The Sheriff is vested with the ability to appoint and direct deputies who will act in his name and office to enforce the appropriate and applicable laws of the State of Florida. Those deputies of the Lee County Sheriff's Office who are Certified Law Enforcement officers must maintain a thorough working knowledge of the laws they enforce and the underlying principals from which they emanate. |

More than 1,600 law enforcement personnel and citizens gathered Jan. 4 at McGregor Baptist Church to observe Scott’s formal oath of office ceremony. The Honorable Judge R. Wallace Pack administered the oath of office, eliciting a rousing applause from the audience. Scott’s first official duties were to swear in Chief Deputy Charles J. Ferrante, agency employees and volunteers. |

There are five (5) distinct operational units under the Sheriff known as Bureaus. Those Bureaus are Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Administration, Special Operations, and Corrections. Each Bureau is comprised of divisions, sections and units with specific functions and responsibilities. In addition, the Chief Deputy has been assigned the direct responsibility of several operational units under the direction of the Sheriff. |

The 1981 North Fort Myers High graduate and third-generation Lee County native has seen many changes over the years. His family’s local roots began in 1910, when his grandfather moved to Lee County from New York. Scott, 41, still lives in North Fort Myers with his wife, Krista, 40, and daughters, Lindsay, 16, and Mackenzie, 13. |

Sheriff Scott holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from IMPAC University in Punta Gorda, Florida. A third generation native of Lee County, Sheriff Scott is married with two children. He is running for a second term in 2008. |
