The series did not receive high rating when it was first aired, and was in fact cancelled before the series was intended to end. Audiences were expecting another giant robot show, and instead found MS Gundam, the first work of anime in an entirely new genre, the [[mecha]] drama. The models from the show sold very well, however, and the show did very well in reruns. Much like the original [[Star Trek]], the original Gundam was not appreciated by its intial audience, and like Star Trek, proceeded to spawn a massive sci-fi franchise, spawning numerous sequels and videogames up to the present day.
Mobile Suit Gundam is one of the most famous anime series ever and has spawned numerous sequels and videogames in the last 20 years. A new Gundam series called Turn A Gundam was released in 1999 for Mobile Suit Gundam's 20th anniversary.


Mobile Suit Gundam was released in the U.S. in July 2001 on [[Cartoon Network]] but it was later cancelled due to poor ratings before the entire series was shown. Ironically, the original series was also cancelled for the same reasons, but its strong cult following grew during reruns in Japan, and eventually sequels were in demand, in a pattern similar to the one followed by Star Trek.

Mobile Suit Gundam (機動戦士ガンダム) is a televised Anime that was written and directed by Tomino Yoshiyuki and is made up of 43 episodes that were aired in 1979. Yasuhiko Iwanade did the character designs.
