Orphaned fair use image (Image:Looney Tunes intro.jpg)
Thanks for uploading :Image:Looney Tunes intro.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Mav, I have a new email, you can write to me from my user page which I suggest you read and follow the link at the top of my talk page; any private comments you would like to share with me would be appreciated. Thank you. Alex756 07:27, 2 February 2007 (UTC) Thanks for your comments; btw some people seem to think there never were "members" of Wikipedia. Do you know where that idea came from? It does not make much sense to me, but it seems that it is being repeated now that there really are no members. Alex756 19:13, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article in need of cleanup - please assist if you can

Hi maveric149,

I'm pretty new at editing and not only using wikipedia.

I searched for gams. What I really wanted was GAMS, but I didn't know that wikipedia is case sensitive. So I added a "See Also" at gams which links to the possibilities of GAMS. Why did you remove it?

Actually, when you type GAMS, you first get at site the gives you three possibilties: GAMS (Software), GAMS (Guide) and Gams (city). but if you type gams, you directly get to the city without a choice.

Instead of me adding "See also" to gams, could you add the "choice site" in between? I don't know how to do that

Thanks Jan

That wasn't me. That was User:Docu. --mav

Grinding stone image

Hello - I was going to do some editing over on the metate and grinding slab pages, and saw that you had upload an image of a grinding stone (on right) - One quick question - can you tell me where the shot was taken (if you are, in fact, the person who uploaded the image)? World Heritage template

Hi! I created a template for World Heritage Sites: Infobox World Heritage Site. Since many of the protected areas are also recognized as World Heritage Sites, I thought that it will be appropriate to forward this template here, and hopefully, for the community to help improve the template. Someone mentioned that the footnotes are unclear (i.e. why the need to emphasize "official" there). It's because the official name (or the name as inscribed on the List) is different from what we usually know. And the Region also has footnote to tackle specifically the classification of those regions which may fall ambiguously between two continents (e.g. those in Russia, Turkey, Cyprus, etc.). In addition, I think that the info provided in the template is much like a jargon for most readers since it box is more of use for internal references in the World Heritage program. I hope that the community will help improve the template and make it more relevant to the readers of wikipedia in general. Thanks. Joey80 13:44, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Delighted to hear from you

It must be because I was thinking about you. As it happens, I was in Valdosta relatively recently after many years away.

First off, let me recommend that you head south of town to Farmer Brown's Market and buy yourself some genuine south Georgia cane syrup. Then, help yourself to a bunch of boiled peanuts. Oh man, I wish.

I see from your pics that you found the courthouse and my favorite store, Southern Salvage, which closed forever the day I got back to town (which I missed).

My number one suggestion of a photo spot is the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area, a southern swamp with boardwalk so you can get out into it. Here are some links:

Near Grand Bay, there is a wonderful little nature museum, operated mainly for scheduled classes by school children, but well worth the visit if you can find it open. Can't temember the name, but I'll see if I can come up with it. (BTW, I see the Grand Bay article is just a stub. I guess I should add something.)

Finally,

 • My brother's Valdosta pics including the courthouse and Southern Salvage, as well as some other stuff, including the "antebellum" (actually postbellum) Southern Mansion called "The Crescent".

Two bonuses:

 • If you are interested, I could arrange an introduction in Valdosta to my cousin's husband, an avid birdwatcher, and, get this, retired state highway engineer, next time you are there.
 • If you can make the time to get down to Tallahassee, you absolutely should not miss another plunge into the North American tropics, Wakulla Springs.

Wow - thanks for the pointers! I will keep all that in mind next time I visit. --mav

Advice

question -- I guess any new articles that refer to people or companies raise a red flag with the editors.

I tried adding an article about a company which created the first software based PBX, but immediately got a spam warning put on it. I have spent a couple of hours improving the article and adding references (to demonstrate notability), however was hoping you could give advice as well.

In case the consensus is that the company is truly not notable, I have no offense taken - I am not related to this company in any way. However, I am a professional in the field which uses their product, and I can see the value of including information about the product (PBX) and the technology and the field of expertise, as there are many certified engineers out there in the market place that I am sure use Wikipedia.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Providing citations for Klinefelter's syndrome

Hey there, I notice that in your initial stub for Klinefelter's syndrome, you asserted "In mammals with more than one X chromosome, the genes on all but one X chromosome are barred from being expressed. This happens in XXY males as well as XX females. A few genes, however, have corresponding genes on the Y chromosome and are not barred. These triploid genes in XXY males may be responsible for the symptoms of Kleinfelter's syndrome." I desperately need a citation for this. All the articles I've so far been able to find on Klinefelter's and X-Inactivation (including journal articles) seem instead to explain the situation by "skewed" or "incomplete" X-Inactivation. In other words, the Y doesn't enter into it.

If you can provide a source, I'd love it. If not, I'll go ahead and replace the explanation with the skewed/incomplete one I can find citations for.

Please let me know what you think/find.

Thanks, --MalcolmGin 12:44, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Getting closure on the (U.S.) vs (US) disambiguation debate

Hi, mav.. Do you still care about this? I'm trying to get closure on what should be the disambiguator. I've personally given up: too many people keep changing the disambiguators to "(U.S.)" flavor. Your editing the In the News template while being involved in the Virgina Tech naming dispute.

Maveric149, it is completely inappropriate for admin editors involved in a naming dispute to change the ITN template to favor their contested article title, citing "consistency with article title" as the rationale for change. As you all know, some hacker cracked my password and I have been stripped of my admin powers. I can understand an admin. being blocked, but stripped of his powers without a fair hearing or consensus, I can't. I have stated that I changed my password and would like my powers back, however the chastizing going on in 4 has sadden me. It doesn't matter how many articles you have written, contributions you have made or how many years you have dedicated to making this project a credible one. A hacker, it seems has the power of making people consider you an untrustful person and turning some people in the community against you.

I have never abused of my powers and I have used Wikipedia as a medium to educate others. Yes, I have no regrets about having made so many contributions to the Pedia. I just don't have time right now. If you removed all the Mesozoic stuff it might simply be better. I will look at what you have. This article is really problematic, though. The geology of California is extraordinarily complex, as you know if you did your undergrad in California. There are ways around this problem which can lead to adequate to even very good articles on California geology for Wikipedia. However, compared to how studied the geology of the state is versus how many California geology articles there are compared to other areas, one might wonder why. The reason is it is so complex. Have you looked at Cordilleran Section (AGS) articles on Lassen? Are there any? Their yearly field trip guidebooks would be at an appropriate level for someone with some background in geology, without being so technical as to be useless for a Wikipedia article. I assume you mean 'Associated Geology Students' with 'AGS'. The uni I went to did not have an AGS and I can't find a central website for it (just webpages for various geology clubs at specific unis). I'm also uncertain if such a field guide would be usable in Wikipedia per WP:CITE requirements for references. I'm already aware of the general order of geologic events in western North America, so I don't need a primer (if that is what you are implying). I just missed a distinction that is rarely made clear in texts aimed at a general readership (as this article is). I think that issue is fixed now. -- mav
I meant GSA Cordilleran Section field trip guidebooks, sorry for saing AGS, as I'm doing some AGU stuff. If you have a background in geology you should have clarified this up without my having to point it out during an FAC, so stop making nasty comments to me, and get the articles properly together before you put them up for FA. This is a major distinction, the composition of the basement versus the orogeny. I'll look at it this weekend. KP Botany 14:05, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Where am I making nasty comments? The basement vs orogeny issue has been fixed - and yet you put the factual accuracy tag back on the article. Why? --mav 20:20, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"Oh, and please stop being so dramatic."[5] Discussing the editor is a nasty comment, because it's personal--you know nothing about me and my level of drama. Discuss the issue, not the editor. KP Botany 19:20, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS, Love your cat. KP Botany 19:21, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Then I apologize. However, in my defense, you also discussed the editor when you called my knowledge of geology into question. A more productive approach would have been to simply state what needed to be improved in the article. --mav
The problem is I tried to point out just how bad the issue with the article was and you came back defending the article. I initially was straight-forward about the introduction because in spite of the almost exclusively layman-level references it appeared the article had been written by someone with a technical background in geology. But picked at my words without addressing the content, and the major issue remains the content of the introduction--still. You left me rather surprised, because I assumed I had made a faulty assumption, namely that the article had been written by someone with a background in geology, and wrongly addressed the editors with this assumption--so I had to say something, anything, that made it clear just how poorly elaborated the underlying rocks were, and how poorly developed in light of the geology, the introduction was. I do apologize for the way I said it, but I think, mav, if you look back at my initial comment, I gave you very specific geologic issues that you could have addressed, and you chose not to, leaving me without a clue what was going on. I'm fine with working with you, but the geology of the Lassen area is rather complex, and isn't my area (strata, give me strata or nothing), and I am preparing for a show. Let's try to think of a more reasonable starting point, time wise. KP Botany 05:37, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
