"Eyes On Me" is the theme song for the video game Final Fantasy VIII, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, with lyrics (which are in English) by Kako Someya. There are several versions of this song (one of the background themes of the game called Julia, a theme for the character Julia Heartilly, is seemingly a rendered musical version of the song), but undoubtedly the most popular are the versions sung by Faye Wong, which made this Hong Kong singer renowned outside of East-Asia. The song ranked as one of the best sellers in Japan, selling some 400,000 copies [1], and receiving the Japan Gold Disc Award for Song of the Year (international) [2]. The single included an instrumental version as well as Wong's ballad "Red Bean", composed by Jim Lau, which had appeared on her 1998 album Scenic Tour. [3]
The song's lyrics unveils the love story between a singer and one of the members of her audience. It can be assumed that they have not met yet, but both share a romantic interest.
The song was included as a bonus track on the Japanese version of Faye's album Fable. [4]
Other versions
The song was covered by Angela Aki for release on her "Kokoro no Senshi" single. In an Excite Japan interview, Aki reports composer Nobuo Uematsu as saying her version 'shed light on "Eyes on Me"' [5].
In 2004 a Japanese-language version entitled "Natsu no Arubamu" (Summer Album) with lyrics by Kazushige Nojima was included on Final Fantasy Song Book Mahoroba [6].
