Charlotte Country Day School is private, secular K-12 school in Charlotte, North Carolina.

History

Founded in 1941 by Dr. Thomas Burton, the school faced initial problems that were soon overcome. By July 1944, it was able to buy a 2,000—volume library from the Aiken School in South Carolina. This acquisition put Country Day in fulfillment of accreditation guidelines for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In September of 1960, it began holding classes on the current site of the Cannon Campus. Twenty years later, Carmel Academy partnered with Country Day, and the former Carmel Academy campus later became the Bissell Campus, where grades 5-8 are held. In 1992, Country Day bypassed the International Baccalaureate prescribed probationary period and became an IB school, one of only 5 ever in the world to do so.

Campus

The campus covers 113 acres divided between two locations, the Cannon Campus for grades JK-4 and 9-12, while the Bissell Campus serves grades 5-8. Also, the campus is very "wired," with Wi-Fi through most of the Upper School and high speed internet connections in all classrooms and computer labs. About 700 computers, including laptops available for check out and school-provided laptops for teachers, are used on campus, not including personal laptops. On the Cannon Campus, the Bruton Smith Athletic Center helps students fulfill the 2 sports they are required to play yearly, with 3 full-sized basketball courts, a weight room, and a 4 lane indoor track. blah instructional rooms, a metallurgy and jewelry-making classroom, and a ceramics classroom. The Center also has four visual arts studios, one of which overlooks the entire campus on an Upper level through high floor-to-ceiling windows. There have also been considerations for a pool and possibly a new Gymnasium.

The Bissel Campus has many features as well. Including these features are a gym housing basketball courts that can also house volley-ball courts, creating two half with a curtain, six basketball hoops, and five sets of bleachers. A sound system that allows "town meetings", lectures, assemblies, and cheerleading routines. Built in with the gym are the 7th and 8th grade hallways and the bookstore that makes half of the students on campus. The 5th and 6th graders are in Rea Hall which also is home to the offices and nurse. The Sklut Center has two art rooms, the cafeteria, a computer lab (and a half)and the general music room. There is an entire building dedicated to Science, as well as a trailer. There are five other trailers that are for foreign language, math, science, and art. They have 3 locker rooms, a playground, blacktop, and basketball courts. Among Cannon Campus there are 2 baseball fields, 2 fields used for P.E. and sports, and a full length football field with goals and a track.

In order to graduate from Charlotte Country Day School, a student must have (in the Upper School):

Each year, a "Spirit Week" is held as a competition between all the grades of the Upper School. Traditionally on a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, on each day each grade sports a different theme. Wednesday is also "Can-Do" day, on which day students bring in cans to benefit local charities, usually the Second Harvest Food Bank. Decoration day, Friday, concludes with a dance from each grade, that is designed by each grade.
