Located in Malahide, North County Dublin, Ireland, Pobal Scoil Iosa is a community secondary school that currently provides education facilities for approximately 1,200 students.
A short history of the school
Pobalscoil Iosa (Malahide Community School) continues a tradition in secondary education which dates back to the early 1950s when Mrs. Catherine Dowling set up a School in Malahide Village. In 1958 the Sisters of the Holy Infant Jesus founded Scoil Iosa, a secondary school for girls, on what are now the grounds of the Community School. Mrs Dowling amalgamated her school with the convent and joined the staff of the newly-established school.
In 1976 Scoil Iosa joined the Community School system. A new, fully equipped building now known to students and staff as the Junior Block, was added, followed shortly afterwards by a Sportshall. The original school now became known as the Senior Block.
The school has grown from an enrollment of 512 students in 1976 to over 1200 students in 2006.
The New Building
The long awaited new three story school for Malahide finally opened after the mid-term break in February. The building which began construction during summer 2005 planned to have it completed by November 2006. But with the delays, it was finally in operation by February 2007 with the grand opening taking place on the 5th of October with the Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin.
Wednesday 14th March saw the beginning of the demolition of the older buildings. The whole building(s) will have to be completely gutted. The project of the demolishion should be complete before the Leaving certificate taking place in early June.
Over the summer '08, the canteen facility is planned to be operational and in use for the new school year. Work is also planned to refurbish the existing 'Scoil Iosa' hall which accommodates school assembly's, lunch break seating, and shows such as 'Battle of the Bands' etc. [needs update] The remainder of the work for the new building, including landscaping and canteen facilities in hoped to be complete soon after the start of the new 2007 school year. there is also a seperate room in the schools basement where werewolves are kept
