VirtualGL Page

You tagged the VirtualGL article with a Notability tag. Can you explain further why you think the article lacks notability? The information in that article is derived from other sources, including the VirtualGL User's Guide and web site. I am the creator of VirtualGL, but I did not start the article. Other users in the community started the article, and I merely edited it to make it accurate. Dcommander (talk) 20:52, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The criterion for notability on Wikipedia (see WP:N guideline) is whether the subject received substantial coverage in independent sources. The product web site, as well as the user guide, are not independent sources since they're (presumably) written by you or by others involved in the maintenance of the software. An evidence of notability would be, for example, if the product has been written about in reputable newspapers or magazines. On the other hand, blogs, forums and other self-published sources don't count. To illustrate that: No one doubts that your product is notable if the New York Times has published an article about it. Currently such sources are missing from the article however. Cf. also the following recent AfD: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Web 2.0 Toolbar. Further, see our guidelines regarding conflict of interest. --B. Wolterding (talk) 08:19, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you explain clearly what this page needs, since you tagged it: Neverwinter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pythang (talkcontribs)

D&D Articles flagged for cleanup

Thanks for letting people know. I am personally unsure what is going on with the project do to being on vacation from Wikipedia due to things related to articles being cleaned up Wikipedia:Requests_for_mediation/Kender. Others may wish to have this information you offer to provide after that is finished up. Plus with a new edition of D&D just coming out there is a LOT more to work on fixing and formatting and all right for even the "good" pages that do not currently have cleanup tags. I am sure you will be hearing from the D&D wikiproject again in the future regarding this service to us. shadzar-talk 01:30, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Contemporary music are interested in having your cleanup listing. How do we set it up? I wasn't sure how to do the template. Regards. --Kleinzach 23:32, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the subscription template, the listing is available now. --B. Wolterding (talk) 08:51, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Iceland

I think WP Iceland could benefit from a cleanup list (as in fact almost any project could). Would you make and post a cleanup list for WP Iceland? IsFari (talk) 08:02, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's been generated - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Iceland/Cleanup listing. --B. Wolterding (talk) 09:13, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject New Jersey

Hi. I added the configuration to WikiProject New Jersey and received this error report. Does the project banner need to be in the main category instead of one of the subcategoaries? The WikiProject New Jersey template is in Category:WikiProject banners with quality assessment. Thanks. Jim Miller See me | Touch me | Review me 11:44, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, an interesting error (now fixed). The banner template is in fact perfectly fine, and is contained in the right category. The problem was rather that I am working on a database snapshot of July 14; and at that time, the template was called "Template:Project New Jersey", and "Template:WikiProject New Jersey" did not exist. Well, as I said, I fixed the problem for now; and for the next data update (probably end of August), everything should be working right away. --B. Wolterding (talk) 12:23, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

article request for clean up

Hi B. Wolterding, I left a message on the technology wikiproject page about having someone review my article. I would like to put my article on the clean up list you suggested. Do I need to put it into the wiki namespace first (publish it)? Currently it is residing on my user page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ek_elwing/myarticle thanks --Emma K (talk) 20:57, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! The cleanup listings contain only article in main space, not in user space, and only those marked with cleanup tags. Also, the listings are refreshed only once per month (approximately), so any changes you make now will only appear around end of August. I suppose that's not want you want; leaving a message on the WikiProject Technology talkpage, as you did, should be a much better way of getting attention for your article. --B. Wolterding (talk) 11:37, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rehearsal

Just a reminder, you are supposed to warn the user who created the article about an AfD nomination. You did not warn me that you nominated one of my created articles for deletion. As such, I did not have the ability to find sources in time. Please follow the proper, and user friendly, AfD steps next time. Undeath (talk) 05:32, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. I forgot I didn't make that one. I just uploaded the picture. Undeath (talk) 05:35, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the offer. Please run your cleanup bot on Wikipedia:WikiProject West Virginia. WVhybrid (talk) 23:16, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done - the listing is available now at Wikipedia:WikiProject West Virginia/Cleanup listing. --B. Wolterding (talk) 07:53, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, this will be a nice help for our project. WVhybrid (talk) 19:17, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rijeka terror attack

In similar situations my question is: Why this article need to be deleted and for example stub articles 1995 kidnapping of western tourists in Jammu and Kashmir and Ramat Gan bus 20 bombing will stay ?--Rjecina (talk) 18:34, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The general principle is (I think) that an encyclopedia, like this one, should only cover topics of some lasting importance, not mere news reports; see WP:NOT#NEWS. My feeling is that the Rijeka incident is only a news topic, and therefore should not have an own article (maybe it could be mentioned somewhere else, if relevant). But things seem to be more controversial than I had thought, I have sent it to a wider discussion forum now to debate the deletion. As for the other articles, it's always a case-by-case decision; I admit they are of questionable notability too. We can deal with those separately, once it's clear whether there is consensus about the Rijeka article. --B. Wolterding (talk) 18:19, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup listings for the Beer Project

Thanks for your message. Yes, we are interested. What happens now? SilkTork *YES! 19:04, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the subscription template, and the listing should appear shortly at Wikipedia:WikiProject Beer/Cleanup listing. --B. Wolterding (talk) 18:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:UNIONISM cleanup

Thanks for that, it's really useful. I assume it auto updates every once in a while?Traditional unionist (talk) 21:02, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, it will auto-update every 1 or 2 months. There's no exact schedule however; it depends on the availability of data dumps, and I don't have any influence on that. --B. Wolterding (talk) 17:53, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'd like to accept your offer for WikiProject Arkansas cleanup. Tell me what needs to be done, if anything. --Chet B. LongTalk/ARK 04:45, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the subscription template; the listing is availavle now at Wikipedia:WikiProject Arkansas/Cleanup listing. --B. Wolterding (talk) 12:48, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thank you so much for your work with WolterBot (talk · contribs), this is really a great service to the project. Quick question - once a cleanup subpage for a particular WikiProject has been created, how often is it updated? Is it on a regular basis of some sort? Thanks again, Cirt (talk) 23:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's automatically updated, but not on a fixed schedule - usually once every 1 or 2 months. The next update will probably be around end of August. However, this depends on the availability of data dumps on which I don't have an influence. --B. Wolterding (talk) 23:51, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah okay thanks, once every 1.5 months certainly seems useful enough for WikiProjects. Cirt (talk) 23:59, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removed merge tags

I removed the merge tags on the Sigma lens as I found no discussion section to explain the rationale of it. If you want to do something about non-notable lens articles, it would be better to start with those that don't cite independent sources about the topic; the one you picked does cite articles about the topic, so it passes the notability test, at least nominally. If you'd like to try again, start the discussion section that the merge tag points to. Dicklyon (talk) 16:06, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Put my article back

MY article on The Broker monster truck was a notable as it gets. Its a regular monster truck in the USHRA monster truck series, which incase you didnt know is a NATION wide monster truck performance show that has pretty regular notability. Im not sure why you singled out this particular truck, but take two seconds and go to the USHRA website and read for yourself. I insprire you to petition the page be reinstated or I will re-write it myself. Aspensti (talk) 05:10, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First, I can neither delete nor undelete articles; what you want is probably WP:DRV. However, please read our inclusion criteria before recreating the article. That the USHRA is notable doesn't mean that each individual truck that runs there is notable. You would have to present independent sources that report about this truck in detail (not the website of the USHRA). Otherwise the article might be deleted again quite soon; there seems to be a wide consensus that individual monster trucks typically don't merit an article on Wikipedia, and a considerable number of them was deleted recently. --B. Wolterding (talk) 10:57, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikification

I thought I would bring our discussion from the Village Pump over to here, since it has become more of a one on one conversation. I'm extremely curious how you went about this with your own WikiProject? The last thing I want is for this endeavor to be brushed aside because it was viewed as spam, overly complicated, or unclear. Wikification (in my opinion at least) is a fairly simple task and can greatly improve an article. If I can get other projects helping with the backlog not only does it help me out, but greatly helps the quality of articles under other WikiProjects. Bvlax2005 (talk) 00:12, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, what I did was the following. I compiled a list of articles tagged with {{notability}} sorted by assigned WikiProject; see Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability/Listing by project. (Unfortunately that is not so trivial on the technical side; but technical details aside, you can see the listings.) Then I posted messages to all projects which had at least 10 articles assigned on that list; see for example here. The messages prominently included the number of flagged articles, a link to the list, plus some links to instructions. The result was a bit mixed. Some projects did indeed clean up a lot of their articles, and our backlog actually decreased in size for the first time (though only temporarily). Other projects apparently ignored the message, were not really interested, are rather inactive, or do not have enough capacity for cleanup. That's in particular true for WP:WikiProject Biography which has an extremely large scope. I would estimate that less than 1/4 of the projects actually started working on the backlog.
Some things I learned from this exercise, and on similar occasions, are: One the one hand, it is necessary to notify WikiProjects directly; hardly anyone reads the village pump or other central discussion places, where I had announced the list previously. On the other hand, many people realize what I mentioned, and thus a large amount of messages is posted to WikiProject talk pages. On the pages of the less active projects, I'd say that more than 50% of messages are automated "cross-postings". These are typically ignored, at least it's very seldom that a discussion of the topic follows. So, the more specific you can be regarding the situation of the WikiProjects, the better your chances of reaching somebody. Also, be very clear about your messages - don't assume that anybody reads the text twice (or even reads it once in full) before answering.
I still update Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability/Listing by project, although it's in principle superseded now by other project-specific listings, see User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings. --B. Wolterding (talk) 17:03, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup listing requirements

Hello - It seems that the requirement that "... the [banner] template must be listed in Category:WikiProject banners...." that is stated here: User:WolterBot/Cleanup_listing_subscription#Parameters is in conflict with the requirement that banner templates should be in the main category, or one of its sub-categories, as described here: User_talk:Happy-melon#WPStatistics. Can you confirm that Wolterbot works if a banner template is in a sub-category and not in the main category. Regards—G716 <T·C> 11:06, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As of this time, WolterBot will work with banners listed in any of the following categories: Category:WikiProject banners, Category:WikiProject banners without quality assessment, Category:WikiProject banners with quality assessment. --B. Wolterding (talk) 16:17, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the update. Should this info be included in the documentation? I don't mind taking a crack at it. Regards—G716 <T·C> 03:14, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the template documentation now. --B. Wolterding (talk) 09:28, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help (and for your great bot)—G716 <T·C> 11:37, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi B,

Can you get your bot to do an updated list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs/Cleanup listing? The list hasn't been updated since mid-July, and it'd be useful to see which articles now require clean-up. Please and thank you. Firsfron of Ronchester 20:25, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I can't provide an update right now. The bot depends on data dumps of Wikipedia, and these have been on halt [1] since more than a month now. I can't say when a new dump will become available, and I don't have an influence on that; however, as soon as one is available, the lists will be updated. --B. Wolterding (talk) 09:33, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, B. I look forward to the eventual update. Thanks for letting me know what had happened. I hope the data dump situation can be corrected soon; I found your clean-up listings very helpful for tracking down problem articles. Best wishes, Firsfron of Ronchester 06:48, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alertbot

Having a bit of trouble with the MySQL, I add

INSERT INTO u_legoktm_alertbot.alertsubscr set project='WikiProject Artemis Fowl',is_workgroup=false,token='WPArtemisFowl';

to the end of create-tables.sql to add WP:AF for a bit bigger trial and I am getting the error:

ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax
to use near 'INSERT INTO u_legoktm_alertbot.alertsubscr set project='WikiProject Artemis Fowl' at line 2

LegoKontribsTalkM 23:21, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. The statement seems perfectly fine; actually I ran it on my local computer, and it worked without problems. Perhaps the error is directly before that statement, i.e. on the previous line? Maybe the final semicolon is missing there. Another guess, in case you edited the file on a Windows machine, there might be some problem with different variants of newline characters. Try running "dos2unix create-tables.sql" before executing the file (not sure whether dos2unix is installed on the tool server). --B. Wolterding (talk) 15:56, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Duh... I was missing a ; A BRFA has been filed: Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/ArticleAlertbot‎. Alertbot was already taken. LegoKontribsTalkM 00:42, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK! Yes, I've seen the BRFA, and added some explanation. One detail: You requested the bot for running "Automatic (supervised)", would "Fully automatic" not be better? Depends on what you prefer, but once you're convinced that the code is stable, you could just schedule it to run once a day, unattended, and get a notification only in case of errors. --B. Wolterding (talk) 07:54, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When will Wolterbot update?

The current snapshot seems to be dated 14 July 2008 - do you have any plans to update the cleanup listings using a more recent snapshot?—G716 <T·C> 00:52, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
