A tag has been placed on Charles Hiram Burnett Sr requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. PMDrive1061 (talk) 22:53, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of John J. McGilvra, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jtenlen/jjmcgilvra.txt. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 20:42, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Richard I have removed the copyright tags from the article Erasmus M. Smithers because there is a credible claim that the text is from the public domain as you said. However, please take the time to fundamentally rewrite it and expand it. It is currently not suitable in tone etc for WP, which is not surprising since it was written in 1903 when the guy was still alive. I hope you will be able to get it up to snuff soon! Welcome. Hi Richard

The article Corliss P. Stone was deleted because it was an exact copy of text found elsewhere on the web, and so posting it was in violation of copyright law. If you are sure that this person is notable and you wish to write about him in you own words please feel free to recreate the article. Please have a look at Wikipedia:Manual of style to see what a Wikipedia article should look like. (If you wish to reply to me you can do so here - I will see any edits you make here). DJ Clayworth (talk) 16:54, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have copied two entries on the talk page of the above article to here. Since the article is deleted the talk page will be too, and you may wish to have a record of what was said. DJ Clayworth (talk) 16:57, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The age of the book this text is from puts the text in the public domain. I also intend to add info from other sources. (contributed by User:RichardBond)

You really should rewrite this in your own words, though you are free (indeed, encouraged) to use this text as a reference. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 16:27, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

End of insert

Hi again Richard.

Thanks for your willingness to contribute to Wikipedia. It's true that an old book is probably in the public domain. However there are other reasons why the original article is inappropriate. It is written in the style of a memoir and not an encyclopedia article: it does not conform to the Wikipedia:Manual of style; and it will need very heavy editing to bring it to Wikipedia standards. I strongly recommend that you rewrite the information there in your own words in in a form appropriate for an encyclopedia. However if you insist on reposting the material it will probably not be deleted again, as long as you include a statement that it is in the public domain.

Incidentally there are no 'supervisors' on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is written by a community of volunteers. The policies represent the consensus of the Wikipedia community. DJ Clayworth (talk) 17:05, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Cornelius H. Hanford

This is the last warning you will receive for your disruptive edits.
The next time you create an inappropriate page, such as Cornelius H. Hanford, you will be blocked from editing.
Cunard (talk) 02:44, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I take that warning back as I see now that your recent page is a) not a test page and b) not a copyvio. Sorry for the final warning. Keep up the article writing and just ignore my warning. My apologies again, Cunard (talk) 02:54, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Public domain

Before anyone blocks you, could provide a link showing how the source for all this is in the public domain? If so, you need to appeal at WP:DRV rather than recreating these. Cheers, Dlohcierekim 02:48, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Better yet

rewrite in your own wordd citing the source. Cheers, Dlohcierekim 02:50, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Response

I start with public domain material then change the text as I get more information from other sources. Also I have not removed stylistic changes or additional information posted by others here to the articles I started. I welcome doing future collaboration with historians and resent people who delete robotically without having regard for sharing the history involved.

Your message

I assume this is about Howard Cranston Potter. 7 people have thought the article should be speedily deleted because it did not assert WHY he was notable. 4 of them tagged it for speedy deletion, the other 3 (including me, most recently) pressed the button to delete it. Instead of blaming others, perhaps improve what you're writing, rather than simply reposting it time after time without addressing the fundamental problem that was leading to it being deleted time after time. Being someone's father-in-law isn't a sufficient assertion of notability, and there's preciously little else in the article about anything apart from his relatives.

If you disagree that the deletions were right, you have two options: (1) write a better article and avoid the problem that way; (2) go to WP:DRV.

As for the articles that I write, they are all to be found in existing biographical dictionaries such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography or the Dictionary of Welsh Biography, and are all properly sourced and referenced. I don't accept the comparison, or the charge of favouritism/bias.

In future, please sign your messages with ~~~~ as it makes life easier for people trying to respond. Regards, BencherliteTalk 17:38, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Despite your personal attacks on me, I have reviewed the policies on these matters, and the source you cite. I have concluded that the source is public domain, that the individual's notability is asserted, and so I have restored the article. If anyone gives you any trouble about this article in terms of copyright violation, please drop a line to my talkpage and I will handle it for you. I have tagged it for cleanup to attract new editors to make it more of an encyclopedic article. Best wishes Fritzpoll (talk) 22:45, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, RichardBond. You have new messages at Fritzpoll's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Despite initial difficulty from an "edit cowboy" James Pieronnet Pierce a codeveloper of the Empire mine one of the largest in California was eventually accepted. It was up for months and I only just now found out about it being deleted by another "edit cowboy" when I tried to post the profile of James ben Ali Haggin the developer of one of the largest mines in Nevada.

Please stop

Please stop recreating the talkpage of Richard Marshall Bond - the article has been deleted, and there should be no talk page for a deleted or non-existent article. I have not been reading the text, and nor has anyone else. If you have questions, please find an alternative forum. Fritzpoll (talk) 16:02, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, mostly because it isn't my concern, and it is in the wrong place. How about bringing your concerns to the attention of the administrator who actually deleted your page, rather than picking on me for performing a standard housekeeping task that the deleting administrator forgot to do? I have nothing to do with your article being deleted. Fritzpoll (talk) 16:24, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll echo this, Richard. If you want to talk about why your article was deleted, my talk page is open. I don't think I can add anything to what Fritzpoll has already said, but I'll be happy to do my best (once I get some sleep, of course). --jonny-mt 16:38, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Despite initial difficulty with an "edit cowboy" James Pieronnet Pierce a codeveloper of the largest mine in California was eventually accepted and was up for months. Now another "edit cowboy" deleted it which I found only out when I tried to add the profile of some of the largest mines in the history of Nevada James ben Ali Haggin. Both of these articles are so old as to be in the public domain under United States law.

Speedy deletion of James ben Ali Haggin

A tag has been placed on James ben Ali Haggin requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. The copyright notice at the bottom of the page says "Copyright 1998-2008". Also the above article is also inappropriate for an encyclopedia. Please rewrite it so as to be appropriate. DJ Clayworth (talk) 17:41, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The website you copied from asserts that they own the copyright to what you copied. You may disagree with them, but we only have your word for it that the original is out of copyright. They say the original was only 'a source', not that they copied it. Wikipedia is not about to get involved in a copyright dispute. Since the article you copied is highly inappropriate for an encyclopedia may I strongly suggest you write an article about James ben Ali Haggin in your own words, using that website as a source, but not copying it. (Incidentally, you can reply on this page - I will see it) DJ Clayworth (talk) 18:17, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
===================================

Hi Richard...

If you are asking about permission to copy this particular bio at url below... the answer is Yes. Would also be nice on Wikipedia!

http://haggin.org/JBAH_Biography.html

I actually did not edit anything, nor add or subtract from. I just recall retyping it exactly as I found it. Just retyped and posted the original text. As I also found it on the web and with the Source. About 8 years ago tho. Then did add 2 photographs I found elsewhere. I also can't even remember where I did find the article. While I've seen many since, this was and still is the best (to me anyway).

Kind regards, Linda

Speedy deletion of James ben Ali Haggin

A tag has been placed on James ben Ali Haggin requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like to remind you not to attack other editors, as you did on James ben Ali Haggin. Please comment on the contributions and not the contributors. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. BEFORE YOU GO DESTROYING OTHER PEOPLES PAGES FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH AMERICAN COPYRIGHT LAW AND READ BOTH THE RELEVANT DISCUSSION AND TALK PAGES. WHEN I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO CHECK IF THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN OR EDITED BY THE OWNER OF HAGGIN.ORG I DID. LINDA HAGGIN PECK'S RESPONSE WAS TO PLEASE PUT IT UP. SINCE THEN A BUNCH OF LAZY INCOMPETENT "EDIT COWBOYS" DELETED IT REPEATEDLY DESPITE REMINDERS REGARDING THE DIFERENCE BETWEEN BRITISH AND AMERICAN COPYRIGHT LAW. IF YOU CAN NOT BE BOTHERED TO RESPECT THE LEGAL DIFFERENCE THEN RECUSE YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU PLAN ON DOING NEXT? DELETE ARTICLES ON RUBBER TIRES FOR MISSPELLING?

Please be civil, and don't use all caps. We are explaining Wikipedia policies to you, not making things up. Let us explain a few more.
First we can't just take your word for what was said by the copyright owner. It's not that we think you are lying, we just have to be sure for legal reasons. Wikipedia could be prosecuted if we violate copyright law, which is why we are so strict about it. What you need to do is to get the website owner to put a notice on the website saying that the text is in the public domain (this shouldn't be a problem if it is actually a copy of an old document). Alternatively you could tell us how to get in touch with the copyright owner herself. Then we can verify things for ourselves. This would have to be through an email that would clearly identify her as being associated with the website.
Finally this has nothing to do with differences in national copyright laws. The same approach would be taken with a website in any country. DJ Clayworth (talk) 14:11, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Can I also remind you that a person has to be notable to get an article on Wikipedia. It is not clear that James ben Ali Haggin is notable. From reading the website he seems to have been a rich farmer, only significant because of his house. It would be helpful to have a brief summary of his achievements. DJ Clayworth (talk) 14:19, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DJ Only someone who likes making arbitrary rulings out of complete ignorance and laziness would have made the mistakes that you did. All I have to do is look at the subjects that you added to see that half or more are not as well known as James ben Ali Haggin. He is notable on numerous grounds as a lawyer, rancher, miner and horse breeder. He was also notable for being part Turkish among Turkish Americans. Also the page that the public domain text is on has the owners email address. Not contacting her to ask whether her note is a forgery is your omission not mine. I have also found out that it is possible for an edit cowboy to arbitarily remove an article which another editor has negotiated changes into eventual approval but that is another historic profile Pierce.

Thanks for explaining the single line problem

Hi Richard. Please can you make sure that you sign any posts you make on a talk page. Do this by adding four tildes at the end of your edit like this: ~~~~. They will be converted to your name and the date and time automatically.
Can you also please refrain from insulting other editors and accusing them of incompetence or laziness when they are trying to help you out. You will not make any friends here if you continue like this. Wikipedia is a community effort and you need to abide by its rules and conventions if you want to participate. The process of checking copyright assertion takes time, and your impatience is not helping.
Can I also point out that the text that you pasted into Wikipedia is entirely inappropriate for an encyclopedia article and at best will require extensive editing to conform to theWikipedia:Manual of style. Are you going to do that editing, or are you going to leave it to one of the other 'lazy' people who edit this encyclopedia? DJ Clayworth (talk) 18:17, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DJ What you have demonstrated is power, subjective judgement and arbitraryness. You have totally removed an article without even checking with the person whose copyright you not they are claiming that the article is under. Addition of information and stylistic changes can not be made to a void space. Are you going to replace the article when you have bothered to contact Linda Haggin Peck? Most of the historians that I know that I bring up Wikipedia to are either mystified by how to join or are burned out from having done so. There is no reason why I should accept that Caryl Churchill is notable but my knowledge of drama performance in England is limited and I can accept that. In the same situation reversed you use your ignorance as reason for deletion. RichardBond (talk) 18:59, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you will find when you have been here a bit longer, the burden is on the person adding material to Wikipedia to show that it satisfies the copyright and notability requirements. DJ Clayworth (talk) 19:19, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By that reasoning DJ most of your articles added would not past muster on notability grounds. Most of my new article additions have been articles from before 75 years ago which I added additional information to. That period is longer in Britain I know but it is not the same law here. Copyright problems

Hello. Concerning your contribution, James Pieronnet Pierce, please note that Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images obtained from other web sites or printed material, without the permission of the author(s). This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.santaclararesearch.net/SCBIOS/JJPIERCEbio.html. As a copyright violation, James Pieronnet Pierce appears to qualify for deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. James Pieronnet Pierce has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message.

If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

  • If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:James Pieronnet Pierce and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
  • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:James Pieronnet Pierce with a link to where we can find that note.
  • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:James Pieronnet Pierce.

However, for textual content, you may simply consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you. -- Shadowlynk (Talk) 23:19, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on History of the Vancouver Stock Exchange requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Largo Plazo (talk) 01:36, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. There isn't any point creating an article before you have some content for it. Even a stub at least defines its topic in a way useful to a reader. —Largo Plazo (talk) 01:38, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There should be an article on the history of the Vancouver Stock Exchange 1907 to 1999 as contrasted to the TSX Venture Exchange. RichardBond (talk) 01:41, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Ibrahim Ben Ali

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Ibrahim Ben Ali, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Ibrahim Ben Ali seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Ibrahim Ben Ali, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. notability is fine

As reviewing administrator, I think the notability as a mining pioneer is fine. But, and it is a very big but, it appears that this is also a copyright violation--see the talk page. You are responsible for the content you paste from other sites, and it appears exceedingly likely that the author of that page did not have permission for the material she used from a printed source. Whether she did or did not give you permission under WP:GFDL, which is much more than just permission to use in WP, is irrelevant. If you would like to claim that you did not use more than a small fair use excerpt from that source, please provide exact quotation marks for the material used. Be aware that paraphrase does not meet our policy. The information DJClayworth posted above with respect to another article is perfectly correct. (and the current US copyright date before which material is Public Domain is 95 years for published works, unless you can show it falls under the various exceptions.) DGG (talk) 09:25, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've left some advice for how to rewrite it on its talk page. DGG (talk) 09:54, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The date of the original publication is before the cut off point for copyright protection under United States law and is there for public domain. RichardBond (talk) 23:13, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The source, History of Kentucky, give a publication date of 1928. 1928+95=1923. unless you can demonstrate why that date is wrong, or how it falls under the exceptions, I shall nominate the article for deletion by the appropriate method. DGG (talk) 22:00, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did not understand the 95 years to extend to a work published that early. I understood it as present and future works. In either case it would be good to have Linda Haggin Peck do the rewrite because she has additional info that is not in the book. Would that put works by someone who died in 1916 back under copyright? That is less than 95 years, if so Jack London's heirs now have a fortune in the royalties coming from US publishers that they no longer thought they had. RichardBond (talk) 00:08, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For the second time (originally added by an anon IP[1]) you restored out of date information to Sugar plantations in Hawaii. You wrote: "Puunene mill on Maui is one of the two last operating sugar mills in Hawaii".[2] Do you have any evidence that is true? Viriditas (talk) 09:50, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"HC&S last plantation in isles to grow for consumption".[3] Viriditas (talk) 09:57, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, this article says G&R is going to continue refining sugar for food production until 2010.[4] I'll change the caption accordingly. Viriditas (talk) 10:03, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you were right. Good job. Viriditas (talk) 10:32, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that while they will mostly produce ethanol for gasohol after 2010 G&R will still be producing a small amount for local consumption and also making rum after that date. RichardBond (talk) 23:48, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would that make them the only producer of Hawaiian rum in the state? Viriditas (talk) 12:07, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
