It includes at least 95 living species in 14 genera and is distributed mainly in the southern half of South America, with only some genera extending into Guyana (Podoxymys) or Venezuela (Bolomys). It also includes genera previously placed in "Scapteromyini". The following genera are now generally recognized:
- Akodon
- Bibimys
- Blarinomys
- Bolomys
- Brucepattersonius
- Deltamys
- Juscelinomys
- Kunsia
- Lenoxus
- Necromys
- Oxymycterus
- Podoxymys
- Scapteromys
- Thalpomys
The Abrothrichini has recently been split from the akodontines. Akodon includes Thaptomys, Chalcomys, Hypsimys, and Microxus.
