A graduate from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, where he teaches nowadays, Hegedűs served as the Hungarian National Philharmonic's soloist from 1979 to 1996. In 1981 he won the Rina Sala Gallo competition, and the next year he was awarded the 2nd prize at the Sydney competition. An intense concert career ensued, with ca. 2300 performances to date.
