Lispole Viaduct

Lispole (Irish: Lios Póil) is a vibrant and rapidly expanding Gaeltacht village in County Kerry, Ireland. It is situated on the Dingle Peninsula 5 miles east of the somewhat more dull town of Dingle and 25 miles west of the crime hotspot Tralee on the N86 National Secondary Route.

Amenities

Lispole has many amenities for locals and tourists alike. The village boasts two convenience stores, one with a petrol station. The village also has a church, a pub, a primary school, a GAA pitch including a handball alley, a community hall, a preschool and recent addition being a wildlife and seal sanctuary. The area also boasts some of the nicest beaches in the Dingle Peninsula and even some of the nicest in the world.

  • The Tralee and Dingle narrow gauge railway ran through Lispole, and a viaduct on the line still stands close to the village. Lispole railway station opened on 1 April 1891, closed for passenger traffic on 17 April 1939, closed for goods traffic on 10 March 1947 and finally closed altogether on 1 July 1953.[1]

People

  • Lispole is the birthplace of Joe Higgins a former Socialist Party TD and a current MEP for the Dublin constituency.
  • Kinard, Lispole is the birthplace of Irish Republican revolutionary Thomas Ashe (Irish: Tomás Ághas).
