Michiel Smit

Michiel Smit (Maasland, Netherlands, 21 August 1976) is a Dutch politician and leader of Nieuw Rechts, a rightwing party.

Michiel Smit was elected to the Rotterdam city council in 2002 as a member of Leefbaar Rotterdam. He was one of the most right-wing voices in the party and was known for his right-wing populist views and contacts with the Flemish Vlaams Blok. In the Dutch national elections of January 2003 Smit held the number two spot on the conservatieven.nl list. In February 2003, he came into conflict with Leefbaar-Rotterdam leader Ronald Sörensen and decided to leave the faction. After leaving, he founded a new party: Nieuw Rechts.

He released his first book "Nederland op z'n kop" in june 2004, just before the european elections. In the book the outlines his views on Dutch society. Allso he describes the threat of muslimextremists in the Netherlands. Dutch media said [citation needed] that Smit was right after the murder on Theo van Gogh.
