Pathamadai or Pattamadai is a panchayat town in Tirunelveli district(surrounded by Kozhumadai/Melacheval in the East, Paymadai/Cheranmahadevi in the West, Pulavan Kudiyeruppu/Kanganankulam in the South and karisulnthamangalam in the North east) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Pathamadai had a population of 14,965. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Pathamadai has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 66%. In Pathamadai, 11% of the population is under age 6.

Birthplace of Swami Sivanada Maharaj

Pathamadai is the birthplace of Divine Life Society Founder Himaya Jothi. Sri. Swami Sivananda Saraswati. (Poorvasrama Name. Dr. P.V. Kuppuswamy).

Swami Sivananda Saraswathi (Sep 8, 1887 - Jul 14, 1963) was a Hindu spiritual teacher and a well known proponent of Yoga and Vedanta. Sivananda was born in Pattamadai. He studied medicine and served in Malaya as a physician for several years before taking up monasticism. He lived most of the later part of his life near Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh.

He is the founder of The Divine Life Society and author of over 200 books[1] on yoga, vedanta and a variety of other subjects. He established Sivananda Ashram, the location of the headquarters of The Divine Life Society (DLS), on the bank of the Ganges at Shivanandanagar, at a distance of 3 kilometres from Rishikesh. [2][3][4]

As Swami Sivananda himself was a doctor, one of the most natural outcomes of his passion to serve was care for the sick and the poor. Swami Sivananda's original medical dispensary established in 1934 was upgraded to a general hospital in 1950, and later an eye hospital was established in 1953. Now it is a 30 bed charitable hospital running at full capacity. Up to 500 outpatients are given free consultation and medicine daily. Free surgery by visiting doctors is performed 6 days per week. Once a week, eye patients are treated while the house doctors visit a nearby village to treat villagers from various surrounding districts. Free eye camps are held from time to time where up to 200 patients will receive eye surgery. There is also a modern hospital in Patamadai named Swami Sivananda Centenary Charitable Hospital, the birthplace of Swami Sivananda built in honour of his centenary in 1987.

Ramasheshier Higher Secondary. School, Pathamadai

Ramasheshier Hr. Sec. School, Pathamadai, on the banks of the Canadian canal, established century ago, is One of the Oldest well known School for its unique highest [ISO] standard of education in the whole Thirunelveli District, which produced many stalwarts in various walks of life across, scientists, bar-at-laws,auditors, doctors, management specialists, teaching and administration staff, IAS, IPS, IFS Services etc., to quote for its credentials.

Mr K.G.Ramaswamy Iyengar (late), native of Karikuruchi,was selected as a best teacher by Government of India in mid 50s. He was the Head Master of the Ramaseshier High School, at Pathamadai. Sri. T.A. Balasundaram Iyer (late), Sri. P.S. Pichumani Iyer (late), Veeravanallur Sri. M. Venkatasubramania Iyer (late), and Sri. N. Sundarasubrahmanian (Retired), were/are the Headmasters contributed their might for the benefit of the School in General and the Student Community in Particular. Mr. M.Venkatasubramanian (M.V.Sir) & Mr. P.S.Krishnaswamy (Popularly known as Ambi Anna Sir) were the recipient of State & National Best Teachers Awards, which adds feathers to this one of the Oldest Schools in the area. There were many IAS, ICS and other bureaucrats from this High School, including veterans like Sri. P.A.Seshan (Former Hindu Paper's Financial Editor, known as LEO).

Sri. P.S. Renganaatha Iyer(Nagpur Rangan) served as the Hon. Correspondent of the School for a long tenure and Sri. N.Sundarasubrahmanian Headmaster (Retired), took over as the successor, is the present Hon. Correspondent of this famous School managed by the Board of Trustees / committee members.

Recently in late 1990s a College in the vicinity of Pattamdai has come up, Scad College of Engineering and Technology is located with less than 2 km distance from Pattamadai. ParaMek Technologies, a leading company from New Delhi, conducted Automotive Engineering & Latest Technologies workshop at Scad College of Engineering and Technology which was attended by more than 200 students from Tirunelveli district. PSN College of Engineering & Technology. Melathediyoor is located 5 km distant.

World Famous Mats of Pathamadai

The famous mats are crafted out of korai grass (marsh Reed (plant)). These mats are also called as Indian Chattai. They are flexible and soft. Mats of this type have been given to Soviet leaders like Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev.

Many weavers have received national awards from the President of India for their unparalleled skill in mat weaving. Pathamadai Pattu Paai has been sent to Queen Victoria & Queen Elizabeth during the British Regime as the Royal Gift from India to highlight the quality and workmen ship of world fame mats. The success of this mat weaving is the closely guarded trade secret among the Muslim Community of Pathamadai from ages.

The traditional colours used are red, green and black and the weaves can reach up to the maximum 140 counts in the silk or pattu mat. The old pattern consisted mainly of stripes at the two ends or streaks through the body (Resemble the Jamakkaalam). Designs inputs by modern designers has led to the making of contemporary mats which are greatly in demand both in the international and national markets.

Today, apart from the sophisticated Pattamdai pai, Pathamadai weavers also craft korai grass shopping bags, place mats, runners, office folders etc. As they adopt to the latest trend these Mats were also made available for sale in online at websites like www.NativeSpecial.com.

Famous (Hostel Narayana) Iyer Hotel Sadavudayaar of Pathamadai

No exaggeration to confess that, even the world famous Thirunelveli Irutu Kadai Lala Halwa is second to (Hostel Narayana)Iyer Hotel wheat Halwa, such a delicious moth watering sweet meat, available as small as 20 grams to feel melting ice cream and swallowed in a single gulp, with irresistible temptation to have non stop. Again the Kizhangu (potato, onion, green chilly with Kadalai Mavu mix) besides the Poori set, is also the other famous stuff of this small Iyer Hotel to be ever green in one's mind, who were fortunate to taste once.

Naadaswara Vidvaan Sri. Rajakkambar (late) of Pathamadai

If not equally famous like Kaarikurichi Sri. Arunachalam (late) the one and the only famous Nadaswara Vidwan from Thirunelveli Diatrict, among the industry dominated Giants from the Tanjore district, Sri. Raaja Kambar (late), was also an exceptional artist of the Naadaswaram, hailed from Pathamadai. For Kolatta Jothrai and the wedding of the riches used to engage Sri. Raja Kambar & Party's Naayanam, as a symbol of prestige.

Sringeri Math Branch

Bharathi Tirtha Bhavan - The Sringeri Math Branch of Pathamadai

All Sringeri Jagadgurus have visited at the request of the sishya devotees and blessed Pathamadai Village en route their Holy Vijaya Yatras from time to time for centuries.

The Sringeri Math Branch of Pattamadai is reverentially named as "Bharathi Theertha Bhavan."

The branch consists of a big mandapam where family functions such as Upanayanam, Abdha purtis.are held regularly. The premises which is the ancestral property of Sri P.S Seethapathi had been donated to the Sri Math for religious cause The Mandapam is being rented out for middle and lower-middle-class people at a nominal cost.
