Alexi Giannoulias was the Democratic nominee for Illinois State Treasurer in the 2006 election. Giannoulias defeated the endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party of Illinois Knox County state's Attorney Paul Mangieri in the March Primary, leading to winning the election in November. He is the son of Alexis Giannoulias a Greek immigrant who founded the well known Broadway Bank in the late 1970's.

Alexi Giannoulias has not received the endorsement of Mike Madigan, chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois.
