Ruma Guha Thakurta (born Bengali: রুমা গুহঠাকুরতা; 21 November 1934 – 3 June 2019) was an Indian Bengali actress and singer.[1][2] She founded Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958. She was the daughter of Satyen Ghosh (Monty Ghosh) and her mother was the singer Sati Devi. Her family was culturally inclined to Brahmo Samaj, a societal component of Brahmoism, and her mother, Sati Ghosh, was a trained vocalist, and elder sister to Bijoya Ray, wife of Satyajit Ray. She began her girlhood as a dancer though her mother and all aunts were exceptionally good vocal artists. Later, she went to Almora Academy of Uday Shakar at Lahore to start her career as a dancer. She also started her early training in music in a school named Swarabitan in Kolkata, which was established by her parents. In the later years, she took training under Abdul Rehman Khan of Patiala gharana, the ustad of Nirmla Devi and Lakshmi Shankar in Bombay. She was married to Kishore Kumar in 1951 and had a son Amit Kumar by this marriage. The couple got divorced in 1958 and she married Arup Guha Thakurta in 1960.[3] She married Arup Guhathakurta and the couple had two children, Ayan and Sramana, who is also a singer.
She made her acting debut with Amiya Chakravarty's Jwar Bhata (1944),[4] when she was just ten years old. This also happened to be the debut film of the legendary actor Dilip Kumar. Her next film as Ruma Ghosh was Nitin Bose's Mashaal (1950) in Hindi, which had a Bengali version called Samar, adapted from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Rajani.[5] She portrayed a blind girl, Sarla, who suddenly finds herself an heir to riches and the world’s perspective towards her changes. After her divorce with Kishore Kumar, Ruma shifted to Calcutta to act in the famous classic, Rajen Tarafdar’s Ganga based on Samaresh Bose’s cult novel of the same name as one of the two parallel leading ladies the other one being Sandhya Roy.[6] Ganga got the National award for the best feature film that year and Ruma's character play as Himi received critical acclamation. In the same year, she acted in a hilarious comedy Personal Assitant opposite to Bhanu Bandopadhayay and in a film Khaniker Atithi by Tapan Sinha portraying a delicate relationship with a person with whom she had a love affair before marriage.
Her film career revived in 1962 with a film she produced herself and her husband directed called Benarasi. It was a moving tale of a courtesan who tries to lead a life of dignity and respect, when her childhood sweetheart, Ratan, takes away from her terrible environment. It did not do well at the box office. It won the BFJA Award for Best Feature Film the following year.
