New Year

Happy New Year, Alf. Normal service to be resumed soon... thank goodness! Bubba hotep 12:06, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year Bubba hotep! Hope the hangover will at least be tolerable ;) --Alf melmac 15:48, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aha, alas (?) no hangover. Couldn't decide on a particular drink last night, so settled for a cup of tea instead (after 1 beer, 1 glass of wine, 1 liquer). Bubba hotep 20:16, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Happy late New Year from me Alfie, I've brought you biscuits!!! KOS | talk 21:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Gunsfornuns (talk · contribs) - Thanks for the reverts. I have blocked this user for a short time. Asteriontalk 00:06, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, I could see there was a lot of stuff to get through. Let's hope a short block works.--Alf melmac 00:15, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Me too. It seems he was copy-and-pasting the wikilinks, the last batch without even paying any attention (i.e typo on link). Regards, Asteriontalk 00:22, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. I wasn't aware of the earlier edits and reversions made to the page.--Ed ¿Cómo estás?Reviews? 02:13, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Am I going mad?

Normal answer = yes, but am I the only one who can't access this page. I'm trying to revert a vandal warning I left. Have added an AGF note on their user page instead. They blanked an AfD page, but it was one they had started themselves so I assume they were trying to withdraw. For all I try, I can't get to it or revert it by any means. Strange. Just when you get a chance, that is. I have to go now, will check again later - just keep getting a "This site is experiencing difficulties" page which I don't get on any other page. Bubba hotep 13:38, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Other than the usual madness - no you are not going mad, I cannot access the page either. I',m looking into it.--Alf melmac 13:43, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm does this work for you - it does for me edit the page. --Alf melmac 13:48, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
HMMMM well it opens edit but won't save, darn it.--Alf melmac 13:50, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried it now and whatever the problem was, it's cleared now. Thanks for checking! Bubba hotep 19:11, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah good, probably some type of server issue (he says, guessing wildly)--Alf melmac 19:29, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's what my nan said when I asked her. ;) Bubba hotep 19:31, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why...?

...am I the only one groaning and vandalising your talk page for your comments here? I am adding "make penis a featured article" to my to-do list as we I speak! Bubba hotep 00:27, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You would like to be remembered as 'that dude who got Penis to featured article'? Please, don't let me stop you :D --Alf melmac 08:37, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, we should not having any prejudice when it comes to encyclopaedic material. Wikipedia is not censored. I'd like to be known for a lot of things... blah blah blah. Yeah, you're right, it's too early! :) Bubba hotep 08:45, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oi, have you seen this?! Quick, take the college article to it.wikipedia! Bubba hotep 12:33, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't noticed :) maybe I should get friendly with a fluent Italian speaker. I'm now hoping for just one more cite for the article to make it that magic "42" --Alf melmac 13:14, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Magic? I thought it was a composite number, bracketed by twin primes. ;) Closes tab before Alf realises Hotep is copying it from the 42 (number) article. Bubba hotep 13:28, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Lemmy spotting. He was on a programme the other night: Top Ten Hellraisers. He was number three, I think it was. Bubba hotep 14:14, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Funny you should mention TV, I was watching ITV3's Inspector Morse thingy last night and nearly fell off my chair when, during the interviews with... programme before the Lewis episode, I saw the Dean of a certain college O_O !! --Alf melmac 14:19, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Latest comment

Regarding the latest comment on the FA: to save you trawling, here is the relevant section. I have no idea whether the original quotations were in italics or whether you were [adding emphasis] otherwise I would have set about it for you this morning! Bubba HoTep 08:46, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bubba, that did save me hunting, well you learn something new everyday.--Alf melmac 12:21, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I thought it was perfectly valid to use italics for quotations as sometimes when you use italics in threads people ask you where you are quoting from! But that is a different matter from mainspace edits, I 'spose! Bubba HoTep 12:33, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'd never actually read that particular line of the MoS, or did and it didn't sink in. I've seen people use the big blue/grey quotes before and after and wasn't rushing to find out how you do those ;) Still, something new learnt already today, can't be bad :) --Alf melmac 12:39, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

??! :D Bubba hotep 17:14, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And another. I added 3 thru 6. :) Bubba hotep 19:49, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal

User:142.227.236.129 repeatedly vandalised many pages. I saw you warned him some time ago please block him if you are an admin. Best wishes. Zello 23:42, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I wasn't about when you left that message, a block now would be considered punative, they are only supposed to be preventative. I do note the IP stopped shortly after being warned by another user. --Alf melmac 11:17, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User:142.227.236.129 has just vandalized (albeit, very lightly) yet another page (the St. Louis Blues hockey team's page). If he has been a frequent vandal (and I see that he has been), please get rid of him. He's not worth keeping around. Thanks. Thunderstix33 23:00, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the vandal didn't continue after the final warning, therefore was not blocked on this particular spree. However, it's usually best to report ongoing vandalism to WP:AIV for future reference. Bubba hotep 08:00, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you see this?

This diff which you just reverted [1] from 121.44.97.131, are you able to see it load properly in your browser? --HappyCamper 12:12, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that appears fine in my browser (Firefox)--Alf melmac 12:13, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm...okay then, it's something on my end then. Thanks. --HappyCamper 12:15, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ass to mouth

I am deeply offended by this article and your comment about religion. Obviously, you have not found salvation in Jesus. I will pray for your eternal soul and hope you will see the light. Re: Dora The Explorer

Hi Alf. I am just wondering whether you are aware of a problem which occurred with the Dora article. When I came on I located vandalism on this article, and subsequently reverted this vandalism to the version you set back to by Sir James Paul. The problem was that this was in itself a vandalised version, and I am not entirely sure where I stand now, since I have reverted a vandalism to a vandalised version, and had to have the version I reverted, reverted again (I hope that's fairly clear...if not, message me.) - I don't know what's liable to happen next, but could you possibly check through history on that article and see where the unsullied versions are? Thanks. Thor Malmjursson 14:09, 14 January 2007 (UTC) Talk to Thor[reply]

The overall diff since 2 Jan is here the current version looks ok, just checking through visually now. Thanks.--Alf melmac 14:12, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at a bigger diff since 3rd Aug the external links maybe suspect, the other sections develop previous info, I can't see anything else obvious.--Alf melmac 14:23, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great job with reverting vandalism. You have beat me to reverts many times. Have a nice week and god bless. --Sir James Paul, La gloria è a dio 17:58, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whats you name on IRC? Also the reason why you are beating me is because sometimes my revert button does not work. --Sir James Paul, La gloria è a dio 18:30, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you (From Dark Green)

Thank you very much for helping with my Userboxes! Interestingly enough (Not meaning in the least to be rude or ungrateful - I'm in no way saying that this is your fault) the boxes, when my curser is moved onto the page, off of the adress-bar area, the userboxes all snap to the left side of the page, overlapping each other. I've also seen this happen with my log-in button bar, on the top of the Wikipedia page - it too moves to the left, overlaped by the Wikipedia logo. Is this a general bug in Wikiformating, or is it just me? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dark Green (talkcontribs) 20:06, 15 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

You're using Internet Explorer? (FireFox is better, you should try it :)) - I've tried a fix for that then. Let me know if it fails.--Alf melmac 01:07, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again; I'm afraid that (For me anyway - maybe you're right about Firefox being better) the userboxes snap together and then overlap, but this time in the center. Thank you very much for helping, though. : )--Dark Green 20:00, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK I'll try again.--Alf melmac 21:32, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Prometheus Rising

You're dead right...the major problem was that I saw no clear way in which to present the outrageous ideas in the book in such a way as they were very clearly just one chap's rather idiosyncratic musings on what consciousness might be like, all in a suitably neutral/verifiable/etc. manner. But since we seem to have a consensus to remove the section altogether (which I did), there is no real need for the NPOV/disputed tag any more, so I took the liberty of removing it. If anyone still has any gripes, they can put it back. I left behind a `citation needed' next to a curious bit of trivia, since it must have come from somewhere, and it may serve the reader to know where. Rosenkreuz 12:24, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. If the section had tried to establish the differences between Leary's ideas and Wilsons, or what Wilson had made changes A, B or C, I might have been happier with it, but as such it just goes over ground we already have - no point in that.--Alf melmac 10:23, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Kirk Hinrich.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Kirk Hinrich.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

PS - I see that the issue has come up before and it seems to have been misunderstood. The key here isn't whether a free alternative is available, but whether a free alternative could be created. And since Kirk Hinrich is alive and is not a recluse, it is reasonably possible for someone to take a DSRL to an arena and get a usable photograph. It's been done for other professional athletes, there's no reason why it can't be done for Hinrich. Mosmof 16:44, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for having the decency to inform me. If the fair use in actual reality does include cropped and photoshopped pictures made from pictures of professionals released as promotional photos by the professionals' teams, I'll eat my hat.--Alf melmac 10:19, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of things: I think there's a common misconception about what the "promotional" template. It's for pictures that are part of a promotional package that organizations send to the media, like if Apple sent out a bunch of images of the new iPhone so magazines can show pictures of them. Or if a photographer wanted to send samples from his portfolio out to the media. And any use of it on Flickr would how to meet fair use criteria, since the copyright still belongs to Apple or the photographer.

In this case, it looks like the photograph is licensed for personal use only, so again, it has to meet fair use criteria. And it doesn't matter if you've cropped or resized it - the license stays the same.

I thought this was a good replacement, except the license does not allow commercial use, which Wikipedia requires. Mosmof 12:30, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I was only wingeing about the difference I believe that the policy and reality has, I'm not going to support or defend the image. That would have been a good replacement, I'm sure in time someone will take a photo, I suggested to the GA editor of the article that he spammed some local wikipedians for them to get their cameras out, I'll bother him again for it.--Alf melmac 12:40, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Tis a damn shame don't ya think Alfie? I saw that you spamed the NBA Wikiproject and the Bulls talk pages for an image, many thanks. I'm on a different PC and I'm to lazy to sign in, I think it's kinda funny. :P 75.51.239.79 22:53, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Loughborough Endowed Schools

Sorry if the edit bothered you; the short note I wrote there included links to three separate pages, previously redirects, about the three separate schools. This is in an effort to create informative pages that contain useful info, and I have followed guidelines laid out by WikiProject Schools. Please take a look at Loughborough Grammar School, which I believe contains everything factual and relevant from Loughborough Endowed Schools, and Loughborough High School and Fairfield Preparatory School, which are works in progress along the same lines.

Oh, sorry. I was just fixing what I thought were errors in the pages, please continue.--Alf melmac 21:07, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
