Vails Gate is a census-designated place located in Orange County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,319.

Geography

Vails Gate is located at 41°27'29" North, 74°3'13" West (41.457943, -74.053484)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,319 people, 1,421 households, and 861 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,281.5/km² (3,330.5/mi²). There are 1,459 housing units at an average density of 563.3/km² (1,464.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 72.34% White, 11.87% African American, 0.39% Native American, 4.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 7.17% from other races, and 4.04% from two or more races. 19.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,421 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $39,851, and the median income for a family is $44,485. Males have a median income of $38,636 versus $31,019 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,967. 10.4% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.3% of those under the age of 18 and 1.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
