"No Future For You" is an upcoming story arc of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight series of comic books based upon the television series of the same name, and is written by Brian K. Vaughan.[1]

Plot details

"No Future For You" focuses on Faith Lehane, as she is given "the assignment that could change her life . . . if Giles's specialized training doesn't make her want to end it first."[1] The story is initially set in Cleveland, but according to Scott Allie in #2, will later be set in England. Faith will have to track down and kill a rogue Slayer named Lady Genevieve Savidge, before Savidge can bring about the Apocalypse.[2]

A preview of the first six pages shows that Robin Wood also appears in this issue. Like Andrew, he seems to be in charge of a squad of Slayers.[3]

An interview with the writer: Brian K. Vaughan confirmed that apart from Faith and Giles, Buffy, Robin, Willow, and Xander all appear in this arc at some point or another.[4]

No Future For You, Part 1

The issue begins with Faith on top of an Art Deco building in Cleveland smoking. After somewhat cynically reminiscing that her mother used to read "Oh The Places You'll Go" to her as a child, she receives a call on her cell phone from Robin Wood. Wood and his "squad" are taking care of a vampire nest, but tells Faith that one of the vampires they staked used to be a single mother. After asking Faith to go check on the children, he attempts to make conversation which Faith cuts short. Faith arrives at the house to discover all 6 of the dead mother's children are vampires. After quickly dusting them, she heads back to her apartment.

Rupert Giles was already there, waiting for her, while drinking tea. After the hellos Giles states that he wants Faith to go on a mission. He explains how high the stakes are, and that it is dangerous. Giles persuades the reluctant Faith, that if she finishes this, he will give her a passport out of the country and an early retirement. Faith agrees, and finds out Giles wants her to kill a slayer. He explains that the girl is past any form of possible rehab, and has to be eliminated.

We are then in another scene with Lady Genevieve (the rogue slayer). She is with her warlock training, who have captured another slayer which Genevieve kills roughly. She shows no sign of guilt, and later demands that the training be completed.

Later, Giles insists that Faith get some training in before she leaves for England. Even though she doesn't think it needs to be done, Giles insists. He tells her that he wants Faith to sneak into Lady Genevieve's 19th birthday party to commit the crime.

In Scotland, Buffy and Xander are training. After Buffy questions him Xander states that he has to train so he can be Renee's sparring partner. After Buffy makes fun of his love interest, she stares blankly at the symbol of twilight from the first arc. Buffy says that she keeps on having this same bad dream every night in which a monster says, "The Queen is Dead. Long Live the Queen" and then devours her.

Now in England, Faith is dressing for the party while Giles gives her a last-minute quiz in etiquette. When Faith appears at the top of the stairs in an elegant gown, ready to leave for the party, she Giles if things are all right, to which Giles responds that things are, "five by five."

Writing and artwork

  • This is the first arc of Buffy season eight that is not written by series creator Joss Whedon.
  • The story arc is set to introduce a new villainous Slayer.[5]
  • The title is a reference to lyrics from "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols.

Continuity

Timing

  • Intended to be set after BtVS's seventh season. The precise timing of this arc is currently uncertain.
  • Stories that take place around the same time in the Buffyverse:

Canonical issues

This series has been described as 'canon' by both Whedon and various commentators. As the creator of Buffy, Joss Whedon's association with Buffyverse story is often linked to how canonical the various stories are. Since Whedon is writing this story, it will be seen as a continuation of the official continuity established by Buffy and Angel.

This may mean it contradicts information given in the previously released non-canonical Queen of the Slayers, and it could potentially contradict the upcoming novel, Dark Congress.
