Among the Hidden is a 1998 young adult novel by Margaret Peterson Haddix concerning a fictional future in which drastic measures have been taken to quell overpopulation. It is the first of seven novels in the Shadow Children series.
Plot Introduction
The story begins in a country with a government that has made it illegal for people to have more than two children. This is due to uneven food distribution that led to shortages and violence. When peace was finally restored the president took drastic measures in order to ensure that the violence didn't break out again; this included the population law. In order to enforce this the president forms the Population Police, a ruthless force established to kill all third children. Thus these children must go into hiding; hence the name Shadow Children.
