Zavoloka


Zavoloka is an experimental music and electronic music composer, sound artist and graphic designer from Kyiv, Ukraine. Real name is Kateryna Zavoloka. Word "Zavoloka" means "deep fog" and also "maverick" in Ukrainian language. Zavoloka's main interest in music is to mix ancient times, old Ukrainian traditions with high modern technology, to experiment with it. She combine melodic experimental electronic music with recorded herself old folk songs, that common people singing at country-side in Ukraine. In 2003 the label Nexsound released her first release Suspenzia, that was the most frequently downloaded piece. At the end of 2003 the CDr "I" appeared on the American label Zeromoon. Her first full-length CD "Plavyna" appeared at the beginning of 2005 under the Austrian label Laton and under Ukrainian label Nexsound. The CD was highly acclaimed and took a Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica in 2005. In June 2007, in #280 The Wire (magazine) there was an article about Zavoloka. In 2007 Zavoloka has released "Viter" CD on Kvitnu label, first from series of albums dedicated to each Universe Elements. In 2008 Zavoloka Kateryna has received the grant of the Stipend Program of the Ministry of Culture of Poland and worked at the Electroacoustic Studio in Cracow Musical Academy.

Zavoloka is a main designer for label Kvitnu, Detali Zvuku festival and Kvitnu Fest.


Zavoloka collaborates with:

  • Mark Clifford (from Seefeel, Polyfusia, Warp records) musician from United Kingdom. In 2007 they released "Split01" CD ep on Polyfusia records.
  • AGF, a.k.a Antye Greie, German poetess and musician. In 2006 they released the full-length CD Nature never produces the same beat twice on Nexsound and played together on different festivals around Europe
  • Anders Dahl - Swedish musician from label Hapna. Zavoloka and Anders Dahl participated in SWIZHE project, hosted by Swedish Institute in 2006-2007.
  • Laetitia - a.k.a Laetitia Morais, visual artist from Portugal. Laetitia Morais made a video, for Zavoloka's "Exhale" track from "Viter" album.
  • Katya Chilly - Ukrainian vocalist. Result of collaboration - several live concerts and music for a "Krashen vechir" video.

Zavoloka also takes part in the international border crossing art project Move with musician/designer Johannes Burstrom, light-designer Tobias Leira, contemporary choreographers/dancers Charlotta Ruth and Alexandr Andriyashkin.



Zavoloka performed live on different international festivals around Europe and Ukraine, like: Presences Electronique (Groupe de Recherches Musicales, INA-GRM), club transmediale, Kvitnu Fest, Detali Zvuku festival, Being the future, Les Urbaines, Stimul, Garage, Unsound, Femmes, Cimatics, Interferenze, Radius, La Nuit Blue, EME07, "AudioVisiva" and many others.
