Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Comment

Regarding slakr:

Why did my page get deleted?
I have no idea what you're talking about. What's vandalism?
If you received a warning from me and you're not logged in, you might have gotten an old warning I sent to someone who shares your IP address. On the other hand, if you've made recent edits and received a recent warning message from me and you genuinely believe that it's not vandalism, don't fret-- simply drop me a message below, because I could have simply made a silly mistake. :)

Regarding SineBot:

Why does SineBot keep signing stuff I've already signed?
All comments should have a signature that includes both a link to your user page (slakr) and a datestamp (05:12, 20 August 2007 (UTC)) (per signatures - internal links). This is most easily generated by placing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your contributions, which makes something like "slakr 05:12, 20 August 2007 (UTC)".[reply]

If you have an interwiki-linked user page, consider either creating a user page on enwiki that redirects to your preferred home wiki or simply opting out of automatic signing.

If you're still having problems after trying that, post a message below. Be sure to include diffs to make sure I can reference the problem.
I don't want my comments signed by SineBot. How do I get it to ignore me or my talk page?
Please use one of the opt-out methods listed on its user page.
SineBot forgot to sign something it should have signed.
Usually this happens because the bot isn't sure if it really should sign something, so it defaults to not signing it (e.g., in cases of complex edits). It does this to avoid being annoying. Other times, a comment might be made when the bot is down for maintenance, so the bot simply never sees it.
SineBot signed something that it genuinely should not have signed.
Please let me know-- especially if you think it's not a one-time thing. Be sure to include diffs to make sure I can reference the problem.
Is SineBot's source code available?
Not currently.
I'm signing with four tildes (~~~~) but it's still saying I didn't!
You likely enabled raw signatures. Open your preferences, click the "User profile" tab, make sure that "Treat the above as wiki markup" is NOT checked, and click Save; it should be fixed. If you have an interwiki-linked user page, consider either creating a user page on enwiki that redirects to your preferred home wiki or simply opting out of automatic signing.

Sine-bot

Ahoy. Cool bot. Except when it gets on my bad side, which is a lot. I use two accounts, my admin account for adminny things (User:Jeffrey O. Gustafson) and this account (User:Mr. Gustafson) for everything else. However, I still request that people contact me through the admin account, and the signature I use while logged in as User:Mr. Gustafson reflects that, providing a link to the admin account. However, Sine-bot thinks I haven't signed (despite the presence of a user name and date stamp) and follows up with its little thing that it does... The most recent example is here. Anyway, it doesn't do this all the time, but when it does it is clearly in error and provides me the annoyance of having to revert it. I was wondering if you could program an exception or whatever it is you robot wizards do. Thanks! --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 05:58, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It thinks you're trying to impersonate someone else. Check out User:SineBot#Opting_out. --slakrtalk / 12:57, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, so I did the thing that's supposed to opt me out, and the bot is still signing my posts... --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 18:58, 21 July 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr. Gustafson (talkcontribs) [reply]
Sorry to pester you, but is this going to be addressed? --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 22:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr. Gustafson (talkcontribs) [reply]
Apologies, but is it that you are ignoring me or simply are unable to help? I applied the proscribed fix, it did not work. I have tried several times to address this issue, you have not replied. The bot is signing my posts when it should not be, and you are not responding. If it does so again, I will block it. --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 00:18, 29 July 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr. Gustafson (talkcontribs) [reply]

thanks for this revert

Oddly, I don't even live in the EU. ;) Not sure why my page was targeted. :) Rockfang (talk) 05:47, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks from me, too. =) It appears I have a groupie. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:36, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sinebot Question

Hi. I was wondering if you would be willing to give out Sinebot's coding, or if you want to hog it for yourself (joking :)) If you would, please reply on my Wikia talk page. Thanks a bunch for your time!--Eulalia (Talk!) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.110.95.248 (talk) 19:30, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Open proxy

Hello! I blocked an ip address (195.189.181.66) as an open proxy but today I was emailed by a good faith user who was affected by the block. I unblocked the ip address but I'm not sure where to go from here. I thought I'd defer a more knowledgeable admin. Seraphim♥Whipp 19:01, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Blocks

Slakr, it looks like you blocked at least three regular editors, indefinitely, for "block evasion", but without any further explanation or reasoning. I am not seeing anything in the contribs or background of any of these accounts to justify indef blocks, and you did not post anything to their talkpages. Can you please explain?

--Elonka 19:41, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Elonka, it looks like Slakr identified Llamadog903 as a Grawp sock, per this diff. No comment on the other two, though I would assume they were also determined somehow to be socks. The llamadog unblock request was on the no-notice grounds, so I declined indicating the rationale behind the block. I then tweaked the block to disable e-mail, as is standard practice with Grawp (who left some lovely gems in my inbox this week, btw). Would concur that some clarification is in order, but I'm in AGF mode at the moment. UltraExactZZ Claims ~ Evidence 19:49, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And what is Slakr basing this on? It's quite a leap to make such an accusation, and then block established editors indefinitely, with no proof, no CheckUser backup, and no reasoning whatsoever. --Elonka 19:56, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Llamadog had a SSP case earlier in the month, here, which was closed with no evidence of misconduct on the part of Llamadog; I can find no other checkuser or SSP data. I'm forced to concur, Slakr, that some clarification is necessary here. UltraExactZZ Claims ~ Evidence 20:09, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have reviewed the Grawp sockpuppet "profile" at WP:LTA#Grawp. I still see nothing to link his behavior, with those of the three established users who were blocked. Generally Grawp sockpuppets are fairly easy to identify, with move vandalism and other clear disruption. --Elonka 20:32, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I bet this is Twinkle related. All three blocked users were Recent Changes patrollers. It looks like when they made a speedy deletion notification with Twinkle, it added the Grawp "Signature" (180K file, NSFW) to the talkpages. Then someone else saw that they were the ones who had added the template, assumed that they were Grawp, and blocked. For admins, check here to see the addition.[1] Now, I'm at the limit of my knowledge about Twinkle, so I'm not sure how it was hacked, but I'd say let's unblock those three users, and go looking for the template problem. --Elonka 21:01, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Found it. A vandal account, Ebpr123 (talk · contribs), vandalized four db-##-notice pages that weren't protected.[2] So anyone using Twinkle during that 20-minute window before they were fixed, was dumping Grawp images on user talkpages. Then once placed, the talkpages were "stuck" with that huge image, which made them difficult to fix. And Recent Changes patrollers using Twinkle, don't always check the user talkpages anyway. The account has since been indef blocked, and the notice pages protected. --Elonka 21:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's some excellent detective work, Elonka. Prior to this I was trying to get ahold of slakr on IRC to ask what this was all about, before reaching any conclusion (no luck, yet). Given what you've found, though, I'm more inclined to presume innocence on the part of these users. Shall we unblock, pending further discussion? – Luna Santin (talk) 21:32, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it was a real mystery. I had to go deep into the javascript and templates to figure out what was going on, with little clue except that all three were RC patrollers. Quite the treasure hunt! I went ahead and unblocked Llama and Mooshy, would you like to unblock Quartermaster? I have met him in real life so it's probably best if someone else does the unblock there. --Elonka 21:36, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Checking for autoblocks, now. – Luna Santin (talk) 21:42, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(ec– yay, party on slakr's talk page :D). They're either compromised accounts or simply grawp socks. Grawp has been known to make legitimate/constructive edits, and now apparently he's masking vandal edits as constructive ones as well so that they will blend in. The two socks that look legit have their most recent edit (a grawp/goatse one, so beware), in deleted contribs. Cheers. --slakrtalk / 21:44, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow, after reading all the other stuff, that's unfortunate. Lol, I'll drop apologies their way. Feel free to unblock. Cheers =) --slakrtalk / 21:46, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Bravo to all involved. It was an interesting experience as I've been assiduously following all of this. Interesting that those of us who are doing anti-vandal work had our own efforts turned against us. As someone who will go do an RfA someday (I'm not ready to be a janitor yet) it was a learning opportunity to be on this side of the problem. Thanks to all! -- Quartermaster (talk) 21:51, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And just because its due.....

{{trout}} Alexfusco5 21:59, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I must comment as well! This was definitely interesting. But, Slakr, do a bit more detective work before you block someone for sockpuppetry next time. Thanks to all involved in the unblocking. {{trout}} The Llama! (talk) 22:01, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

huh?

Blocked me?

Blocked my Wikipedia account? Or what?

Could you please explain what you are talking about?

Thanks,

--Mooshykris (talk) 22:18, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Seriously, I'm curious. I'd just love to know what on earth could've happened in the time I was downstairs eating dinner :P.

What edit or template was messed up :P.

Last question: is that why my Twinkle wasn't working right for a little while?

--Mooshykris (talk) 22:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Check out the discussion directly above. :P --slakrtalk / 22:27, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It appears the block has not been removed

It appears the block has not been removed– a google search of LowLeadBooks confirms that fact –

I extend this email in an attempt to rectify slenderest posting about LowLead Books - I am the owner of Lowlead Books –a respectful, legitimate, well establish online bookstore- these accusation are baseless, we have never posted Spam of any kind- LowLead Books has no intentions, benefit, or incentive in posting spam – I assume our competitors may have acted in an attempted to discredited the name.

I ask that these negative accusation, reflected on Wikipedia be omitted at once.

Respectfully

The block on the LowLeadBooks (talk · contribs) account will not be removed. It is a violation of our username policy as it matches the name of a company and was being used to promote it. A very obvious advertisement was placed on its User talk page on 07:11, 24 November 2006. If you would like a copy of this, I will be happy to provide it to a confirmed email account. --slakrtalk / 14:38, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps any, since the talk page was old (i.e., it's at least a year old), I've removed the block message so that it should eventually be dropped from google's and other search engine indexes. --slakrtalk / 14:48, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SineBot broken

Hi, ur Sinebot keeps saying that my signature: ATMarsden Whadda ya want? is non-existant, and so keeps adding preceeding unsigned comment status!!! Plz make it stop!!! ATMarsden Whadda ya want? 14:15, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pagemove vandalism

Hello Slakr,

Thanks for cleaning up pagemove vandalism. It seems that several pages still need to be fixed, however. Does the H++G++G++E++R? page contain valid revisions? If so, they should probably be merged into Milky Way Galaxy. Also, does the H++G+G++E++R?? page contain meaningful revisions? If so, they should be restored and merged into Mark Hamill; there are several redirects to this page (Talk:H++G+G++E++R?? should probably be fixed as well[3]). Thanks, Korg (talk) 17:02, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sinebot too aggressive?

I noticed an instance of Sinebot autosigning someone's edit within 1 minute of it being posted. The user, realizing they had forgotten to sign, went back and tried to sign their post, but it got mixed up with SineBot's HTML comments, breaking the comments and thus hiding all subsequent content on the page for 2 days (until someone figured out what was wrong). Does Sinebot really need to be that aggressive? Couldn't it at least wait more than 1 minute? Kaldari (talk) 19:00, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
