Trance.nu is a independent English trance orientated music-site including news, reviews, interviews and forums.[1]

The site is notable for it's compilation releases and interviews with artists such as Tiësto, Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren. Trance.nu also hosts the Future Favorite segment on Armin van Buurens radio show A State of Trance which, internationally,[2] attracts more than 6,000,000 listeners weekly.[3]

History

The domain was bought 1999 by Tommie Podzemski to create a free webmail and redirection service. After one year in operation, Ralf Elving came aboard and they both created the foundation of trance.nu along with a third person, Jezper Söderlund. The promotional work of mailing several labels and artists resulted in interest from Armin van Buuren and Misja Helsloot. And after interviewing these djs and producers, trance.nu’s news and interview section had been created.

The first version of the site, released late 2000, contained news, links and reviews.[4] In the summer of 2001 trance.nu released their first community-website,[5] which included guest books, private messages and profiles which took them closer to their goal of promoting trance music. In late summer of 2007 trance.nu released their fourth re-incarnation of the site with Facebook alike features such as status updates, friends and galleries.

Software

The site is based on it's own software called omgApi which is coded and maintained by Tommie Podzemski,[6] and open source software such as MySql, Smarty, PHP and PEAR.

Open Social and API

In May 2008, trance.nu announced that they're joining the OpenSocial Alliance, founded by Google.[7] They also announced the public release of their API,[8] making it possible for other website to gain access to their data.

Staff

Throughout the years the staff expanded into over 15 volunteers that are working non profit for the website.

Statistics

Since 1999, trance.nu published over 3500 news items, 1600 reviews and 200 interviews. Being home to over 65 000 members,[9] trance.nu is among the 1400 largest forums in the world according to big-boards.com.[10] The site is solely run off the non profit work of an independent staff from across the globe.

Compilation releases

Surviving The Chills

In November 2004, trance.nu released their first cd-compilation, Surviving The Chills, on Nordic Records sublabel Green.[11] The Cd included artists such as Mark Norman, Jezper Söderlund and Elizabeth Fields, combining established artists with up and coming talents from the site.

.nu Trance Generation

The success of their first CD spawned into a second release, .nu Trance Generation - The Trance Anthems Of Tomorrow on Green in 2003.[12] The compilation was designed to showcase new "up and coming" trance producers from trance.nu.
