The Sites

The school is based on two sites, named North and South Site, linked together by an adjoining field. In the period before the co-educational era, the South Site was host to the Thorpe St Andrew Grammar School, and was attended by pupils in the area who passed the 11-plus exam. Those who failed the 11-plus attended the Comprehensive, which was then situated on the North Site. Unsurprisingly, in those days there was a great rivalry between the two schools, and regular sporting events were held that were fiercely contested. To this day there remains a certain amount of rivalry between the pupils resident on either site, though this owes much to the segregation of pupils from separate sites within classes from years 7-9 (a policy which is relaxed somewhat for students in years 10-11, and especially years 12-13). All students have lessons on both sites and 'cross' between them on a one-way system. The North Site is host to the Modern Foreign Languages, English, Drama, Design and Technology, RE and Media departments, as well as the library (or Learning Resource Centre, as it has become known). The South Site is where the Science, Mathematics, History, Geography, Art and Music departments and classes can be found. Various other facilities are shared between the two sites, such as Computer rooms and gyms for Physical Education classes. Classrooms are named by their site and a number, e.g. "S10" on South Site and "N20" on North Site. Students are either based in a house on the North or South Site. Students are arranged into forms within the houses, and all forms must attend house assembly which occurs three times within the two-week schedule. There are 3 houses on each site, which are all named after constellations; Altair, Mira and Cygnus (constellation)on North Site and Vega, Polaris! and Sirius on South Site. In each house there are 9 forms. And you go to these forms in the morning and after lunch.

Constructions

An astroturf has recently been constructed on the school field, allowing students to play football/(soccer) in all weather conditions. The astroturf can be rented out for £40 per hour.

The school has its own science block, a construction separate from the main school building. It was built to replace the dilapidated science rooms in the main south site building. It sports air conditioning in every classroom, as well as fume cupboards and other scientific equipment.
A new technology block containing CAD/CAM machinery has been built in the last academic year. Its Eco friendly design helps reduce the carbon footprint of the building. It can be rented to businesses or groups who which to use it.
