Ian Button is best known for being the guitarist in Death in Vegas and, from 1986-1991 The Thrashing Doves. Though Death in Vegas' main creative force Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes are often regarded as the only 2 permanent members of the band, Button was instrumental throughout the band's existence, and is in fact the only member of the band to play at every live Death in Vegas gig. He has twice been asked to play in The Sisters of Mercy - first in 1981 (when he was offered the drummer position) and in 2001 (when he was asked to play guitar).

Ian splits his current work between performing and producing. He is currently the drummer in the antifolk band Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences and the bassist in David Cronenberg's Wife. He also plays drums in D.I.V bassist Mat Flint's new band Deep Cut (a band he also produces), as well as playing drums for Dot Allison, having previously played guitar for her. He plays guitar and helps record the band Go Kart Mozart (fronted by Lawrence Hayward, ex Felt and Denim). Other current projects include a collaboration with Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby in France. In 2008, he played bass on a Pete Doherty track ('Salome') for Doherty's latest solo album. Ian releases his own material under the name The Anthony Anderson Project (he first used the name Anthony Anderson as the credit on the D.I.V album 'Dead Elvis'.)

Button is the producer of many up-and-coming acts, (many of which make up the Antifolk UK scene) including Thee Awkward Silences, Extradition Order, David Cronenberg's Wife, the Beat Maras, Char Johnson, 4 or 5 Magicians, The Glad Rags and others.
