Aelita is a character from the French animated television series Code: Lyoko.

Aelita is the "Princess" and sole known inhabitant of the virtual world of Lyoko. Aelita is from Lyoko. While her earliest history has not yet been definitively revealed, we do know a little bit about her. She was originally there alone, with only X.A.N.A. to keep her company. (If you would consider him company, anyway.) Although Aelita would be considered a mere computer program, she is definitely not your average AI; she experiences human emotion as if she were born to this world naturally.

In Lyoko, Aelita wears a pink mini skirt and a matching top that go over pants and a long shirt that are both off-white. Her pants have maroon bandage-like things that wrap around them, and matching shoes. In her right ear is a small earring. On Earth, her outfit has changed in the season one-two transition. In the first season, she had a maroon skirt, pink jacket, and yellow shirt under that. Season two-Aelita consists of a pink jumper/hoodie hybrid and knee socks.

In Lyoko she doesn't necessarily fight or use weapons, but instead enters the code "Lyoko" into the towers to deactivate them and stop whatever bad things are happening in the real world from X.A.N.A. If worse comes to worse, she can manipulate her environment by singing, which can make it harder for enemies to gun her down. Unfortunately, that move costs her half of her life points.

It is said that Aelita first contacted Jeremie through an S.O.S. call that was intended for someone on our end to intercept and help stop X.A.N.A. She is in love with Jeremie, finding his intelligence and knowledge attractive. They often spend time talking about the real world, of which she knows little about and finds fascinating and wonderous. (The affection is reciprocated by Jeremie; the two are more open to each other than Yumi and Ulrich have been to date.)

On Earth, Aelita tells people she's Odd's cousin from Canada and adopts the last name of Stones. Aelita's last name might originate from the Rosetta Stone. The Rosetta Stone was found by French (Code: Lyoko was made in France) soldiers who were rebuilding a fort in Egypt. The Rosetta Stone led to the modern understanding of hieroglyphs, or the Egyptian alphabet, which previously was not understood, by creating a bridge of understanding with two different languages, Greek and Egyptian. This is sort of what Aelita does, but with reality and virtual-reality; or humans and machines. Jeremy, a French boy, discovered Aelita alone in Lyoko. Aelita is both human and virtual. Lyoko is an unknown and misunderstood place to humans, like Egypt was originally to the French. Aelita is the savior and bridge of understanding between humans and machines, much like the Rosetta Stone. Also, a rose is a type of flower that often comes in the color pink, a color Aelita is associated with and wears often.

Or, with her enjoyment of creating music, might have gotten the name Stones from the Rolling Stones.

In the beginning of the series, Aelita "lived" within the virtual world, assisting Jeremie, Odd, Yumi and Ulrich to stop the attacks of X.A.N.A. against the real world. In love with Aelita (as noted above), Jeremie searched for a method to "materialize" her into the real world, so that the supercomputer containing Lyoko might be shut down without losing Aelita, and X.A.N.A.'s threat ended forever. She was finally materialized in the last two episodes of Season 1 ("Code Earth," "False Start"), but returned to Lyoko for a time due to a virus implanted in her by X.A.N.A. that keeps her linked to it (if X.A.N.A. is destroyed, so goes Aelita due to the virus). She has since returned to Earth in Season 2 (though not yet free of the contamination), living as a boarding student at the school under the name of Aelita Stones, and is listed in the school records as Odd's cousin. In the real world, she has been plagued by visions and hallucinations, sometimes helpful, sometimes terrifying (at least through the episode "Mister Puck"). Jeremie continues searching for an antidote to X.A.N.A.'s virus.

Unlike the other characters (who can be devirtualized by normal computer command), Aelita must be devirtualized by Jeremie from within a tower, and she is subject to death if she loses all life points while in Lyoko. On the other hand, evidence exists that she can program the supercomputer from the laboratory; she has virtualized herself by setting a time delay before the launch of the scanner, and was probably the controller while Jeremie visited Lyoko in "Mister Puck." She also controlled the computer from inside Lyoko to virtualize Jeremie, when he entered X.A.N.A.'s constructed world to save his friends ("Ghost Channel").

Aelita's primary power is the ability to shut down X.A.N.A.'s attacks by deactivating the gateway towers through which "he" launches them against Earth. She does this by entering the tower and "logging in" to an access portal (a floating data screen) and entering the code "Lyoko" (from which the title of the series). She is the only one of the five who can do so.

She has other powers, though she does not use them often. She can change her surrounding envornment to form shields and other useful structures. This is mainly used to stall for time if help has not arrived yet. She used her attacking powers once, which almost got her killed. She is normally unarmed, as opposed to her friends while on Lyoko; however, in one episode, she uses Yumi's tessen fans. If Aelita is feeling confident when being chased by monsters, she does things that the viewer has often not seen her do before. For instance, when forced to run a mission by herself at one time, she produces exceptional feats of top-skateboarder ability on her Overboard, managing to singlehandedly destroy a squad of Hornets by herself. Additionally, she has at least once produced a clone image of herself to distract X.A.N.A.'s monsters, especially the Scyphozoa, so that she could sneak past and get to the tower Still, if Aelita were to take too much damage or fall into the digital sea that surrounds all the regions, she would disappear forever (as noted above).

While working with Jeremie to defeat X.A.N.A.'s virus, Aelita spends her time in classes at Kadic Academy with the others. In addition to the pressures of school, she must also endure various pressures -- her lack of familliarity with the human world, allowing her to make costly mistakes; the teasing of Sissi, Nicholas and Herb; and her recurring visons (though these seem to have tapered off or disappeared since the episode "Mister Puck"). She is also frequently yelled at by Jim Moralés, the handyman and physical education teacher.

Aelita has discovered that she has quite the talent for mixing techno music as a disc jockey, and considers doing so her favorite Earthly thing ("Final Mix").

Aelita's Weapons and Capacities Inside Lyoko

  • Skills: Aelita can feel/sense what is going on in Lyoko, and has the ability to alter Lyoko's landscape to create holes or barriers (at the cost of 50 life points). Some episodes have her using this power more than once, suggesting that she can make small changes without cost.
  • Weapons: Currently, Aelita has no weapons of her own. However, in the episode Attack of the Zombies, she uses Yumi's tessen fans to destroy a Crab that was chasing them.
  • Life Points: 100
  • Vehicle: Aelita typically rides as a passenger with Odd or Yumi. She's also ridden with Ulrich on occasion. When alone, she uses any available vehicle (usually the Overboard or Overwing).
  • ID card: The back of Aelita's Lyoko ID card shows a pink version of the Eye of XANA.

Voice actor information

Aelita is voiced by Sharon Mann in the American dub of Code: Lyoko. She also voices her lover, Jeremie Belpois.
