The Coen River, on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland was probably named in honour of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, 1619-1623 and 1627-1629. The name was conferred by Jan Carstenszoon in 1623. Confusion about the location of the river led to the situation where 2 rivers in Northern Queensland bore the name Coen River. See the entry for Pennefather River for details.
