Markus Neteler received his degree in Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology at the University of Hannover, Germany in 1999, where he worked as a researcher and teaching for two years.

From 2001-2007, he was a researcher at FBK[1] (formerly ITC-irst).

In the period 2005-2007, while preserving the work of FBK researcher, he worked as the same figure for the Centro di Ecologia Alpina[2] of Trento (Italy).

From 2008 he worked at the Fondazione Edmund Mach [3] (FEM) - San Michele All'Adige (Trento, Italy), as coordinator of unit research in GIS and Remote Sensing[4].

His main interests are in remote sensing for environmental risk assessment and Free Software GIS development, especially GRASS (which is the coordinator since 1999).

He is coauthor of two books on the use of free software GRASS[5] and several scientific papers on GIS.

It is a founding member of the GRASS Anwender-Vereinigung eV[6] (Germany) and the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo, USA).

In September 2006, was honored with the award Sol Katz for the Geospatial Free and Open Source Software (GFOSS) on its commitment to the GRASS project coordination.

In 2010 he received his phd in Natural Sciences (Dr. rer.nat) in Physical Geography.
