The Tasmanian Government Railways were absorbed into the Australian National Railways Commission, established by the Whitlam Government in 1975, along with the former Commonwealth Railways, the the non-urban railways of South Australia. The former Tasmanian Government Railways were sold to Pacific National when the Australian National Railways Commission was broken up.
